I was met with 42° and moderate winds this morning when I got to my high point to listen. I thought I heard a bird gobble down below me but wasn't sure. Moved a little further down, and confirmed I heard him, but couldn't tell if he was across the river.
As I got closer, I could tell it was two separate birds, and one was on my side. By the time I got to him he was already on the ground. I quickly set up and wasn't sitting there two minutes before I caught movement and saw him about 60 yards below me.
But instead of coming toward me, he walked toward a clearing and let a gobble out. I called one time, he gobbled right back, and he immediately turned around and came back to where he came from. Watched him strut at about 55 yards before he got to about 40 before I shot him. It was 645 when I pulled the trigger.
I was pleasantly surprised as I rarely kill a bird right off the roost. Nice heavy bird with one spur being an inch and the other 1.25.
