Here's a tip for ALL of you.  If you have a jake, get a laydown hen and put the laydown hen 3 feet in front of the jake.  You can Thank me later!

I have a leading hen, and will likely not purchase any more...

Makes a good upright hen (in which the posture makes other hens want to fight), and take the stake off, it makes a good lay-down hen.  Jakes and toms have mounted it...

One decoy, it would be the leading hen.  Two would be 3/4 jake and leading hen...  Add a third and it would be a feeder.

Mostly my decoys collect dust currently...  I am too lazy to carry them around.
Did I do that?

Fly fishermen are born honest, but they get over it.

I have their posturing hen and really like her but need another one. Which hen is your favorite from them Mr. Massey?

What do you own now? And have you looked at the Preening Hen?

MK M GOBL

Right now I just have the posturing hen and the posturing Jake. I've really looked at that preening hen but also the leading hen I like the looks of a lot, they have some really good hen poses

(Private Land Hunts)

My favorites for R&G are the 3/4 Strut Jake and Upright Hen, and if in a Field Hunt I run my White Headed Strutter I designed/developed along with a Breeding Hen, then my Feeding Hen. I do have the Leading Hen too but use her in more of a Hen "Flock".

One big thin with my Strutter is I made a Manual Motion System for him so he can dance for the ladies, Deadly thing to do id face that White Head at an incoming Tom, and then face him back away towards the Breeding Hen, It just drives them to come in.

Those are great strategies MK M GOBL, are you with DSD's company?

Nope, just a big fan of their decoys. I do a number of seminars every year on "Hunting Decoys Right" and have a set of rules that I go by.

If you have any questions just hit me up.

Bumping an old thread for a question as I'm thinking about getting a couple Dave Smith decoys.

Do they ever go on sale? I have never really thought about buying them before so have never tracked sales before.

Best place to find them "on sale" is on Facebook Marketplace.   ;)

I have a 3/4 strut jake with a 2008 stamp I bought from someone on here.
I caped out a gobbler saddle with the fan attached and screwed it to the decoy's back with black washers. Those saddle feathers shine and dance in the wind.
I removed the wings and screwed them the decoy the same way.
Then I took a plastic handle and screwed it to the belly for easy transport.

It looks so beat up at this point from getting flogged that the gobblers can't help but come in and beat on him.
Last year I took a second cape/fan and laid it on the ground with the fan sticking up and resting on the 3/4 decoy. I screwed a taxidermy hen head to a 2x4 and slid it under the cape.
Effectively making a "breeding pair".
Tied a string to it for some movement and it was pure gold. So much fun hunting with the kids and my mom that way. They killed some monsters.

I had one bird come out and hang up. I gave him a "squealing hen" on my wingbone and he RAN to beat on Davey Smith.

Just a heads up I did a little Facebook investigation today and found that last year DSD had a Black Friday sale and a "Turkey Week" sale in March. Both were 20% discounts.

So now I wait

Interesting, I havent seen them do sales since they were sold to MeatEater, I thought they just do Free Shipping as their sale now.. but it's possible I missed it.

They used to do 30% off twice a year before the sale.

I took your advice to heart and found a nice set of three about an hour and a half from home yesterday. I thought I had everything wrapped up for a buy in a couple of days. The dude just messaged me that his dad wants to use them this spring. DANG IT

When I take my 9 year old son this is the decoy setup I use. 3/4 strut Jake and a lay down hen. Works like a charm

I've got three more DSD that are not in this group photo. Maybe this spring I'll get a new family photo  ;D  I love them and they work awesome but now that my boys are older, I don't use them nearly as much. I'll have them in camp if needed.

I have been making up my White-Headed Strutter Decoys since 1999 when I first developed this Decoy Tactic, I have been "upgrading" design over the years, I also have a Manual Motion System that adds to the effectiveness of this as well. Currently use DSD Jake Strutter as the "Base" Decoy and then add my design to them. All I can say is "He's Dead Using the White Head"
