Have you looked at lodging? Prices have jumped way up compared to six months ago. People are starting to travel.

 Did today for a place in Wyoming, 65$ a night in town. That's cheap enough for me with decent reviews.

Bump - an article in our S/W Florida newspaper this morning described the rental car situation in various areas.  Sounded similar to finding ammo.  May be a deal breaker for my solo trip out west.  We'll see about a week out.
