Took a break today from chasing gobblers & caught this 20" Native rainbow trout here in the mountains of Va. Trout weighed aprox. 3 lbs.

That's a nice one! :icon_thumright:
Now that's a nice one Ricky.....
Gorgeous colors and very nice trout.
Wow......I would have guessed a Cut Throat. Is the "Native" what makes him so red?
She's a beauty Clark.
Nice catch!!

Yes the native trout are colored up a lot more !
Very nice..

Nice fish and colors

Sorry right off the bat for sounding like a dork but that is a wild stream bread fish that is absolutely gorgeous. Nice work but the only native trout we have around these parts is the brook trout. Native fish are those that originated in a location such as the brook trout in the Appalachian mountains. Rainbow trout originated in the pacific as a sea run species typical to a salmon. Anyway great fish something to be very proud of!!!! :happy0064: :you_rock:
beautiful fish!

Like you said, Native fish are those that originated in a location. Rainbow trout were put in this mountain stream over 30 years ago. Thus making this trout a native rainbow if it was born in this stream. Thanks VATURKEY :newmascot:
Congrats on a GREAT trout Ricky!!
Beautiful trout!! Congrats!
Beautiful fish! Congrats on a good one!

Actually, it would be considered wild, not native. As stated before, the only trout native to that area are Brook Trout. And technically they aren't even a trout, but rather a Char. Regardless, that's a beautiful fish, and I'm jealous!
Did you catch it on a fly rod. If you did what fly pattern did you use? Nice, Rainbow.
That's a dandy. Congrats
Nice fish..Ive caught some nice natives..but none that size. A pole will darn near reach across the native streams I fish.
That is a beauty! Way to go!

Yes I did catch it on a fly rod but not on a fly. I use small live minnows for trout. I've got a 6 ft scott fly rod with a small ultralite reel on it. Works really good for tight spots. Thanks Ricky :newmascot:
nice fish!!
Regardless whether it is native or wild, it is a beautiful trout.
Was it big water? Like big water as in running into a lake?
Either way awesome fish and I bet it was a haus on that 7 fter.
VATURKEY,
I'm jealous!!! That is a beautiful fish. A 20 incher, in your neck of the woods, is definitely something to BRAG about. I know, because I've fished the South Fork of the Holston River from Sugar Grove to Chilhowie as a boy and it is the one thing that I miss since moving to Eastern NC. Congratulations and KEEP AFTER EM!!!!!

No its a small mountain stream with some pretty good pools in it. With all this rain we have had the water is in real good shape. Didnt expect a trout this big would be in there therefore I had no landing net with me. Didnt think I would land him with all the deadfalls & overhanging branches. Thanks for all the comments folks. Ricky :newmascot:
