Title: Remington® Model 870 SPS Super Mag Turkey vs Turkey/Predator
Post by: jims on May 20, 2018, 05:18:19 PM
I noticed Remington has 2 similar 870 Super Mags.  One is the turkey and the other turkey/predator.  The turkey has a 23" barrel and the other has only a 20" barrel.  Does anyone have any experience with either of these.  I would think the 23" may hold a little tighter group at 40+ yards?  It looks like the turkey/predator also has a little different rubber grip on the forearm and stalk....which I would like.  I would buy a different dot scope than comes with the turkey/predator.  Just curious what you guys think?  I hunt fairly open country so having a little more range would be good but not sure if there is much difference between the 2 shotguns?

I have the 23" model. Love it. Patterns phenomenally with a Sumtoy .660 and 3.5" Magnum Blends.

If you decide on the 20" gun, I'm sure William @ Sumtoy can build you a choke tube for it... :camohat:

my son has the 20" gun it out patterns all of my other turkey guns with longer barrels. 3 of which are 870's and 1 is a SBEII, can't go wrong with either. I can tell you after carring it for about 5 min. the other's feel like your caring around an old TV antenna in the woods

This is so true! I carried a 26" gun all season except one hunt, but when you sling a 18" - 21" barreled gun they don't even stick up higher than your head. That's very nice when you are creeping through a swamp or pine plantation!

Either barrel sounds pretty impressive.  Does anyone else have any experience with either model?  It sure would be a lot easier lugging around than a 28" barrel!

Get one or the other! I carried around a 28" Remington V3. It`s a great gun, but I`m a convert to a shorter barrel, for turkey, even if the gun that has it weighs more. For this last season, I bought a pre-owned, 870 Super Mag SP-T Thumbhole 12 Ga with a red dot. It`s `05-`07 vintage, so it`s an earlier model of the guns at which you`re looking. The thing is rock solid, tight as can be, kicks like a mule ( enter a slip on Limbsaver, problem solved for the most part). Has the 23" barrel and a sling. Weighs 8 lbs, but those kinds of guns are the way to go for turkey, IMHO. Walking through the woods hands free...yep. Love mine.

I am a short barrel fan.  That being said my last (and hopefully last) gun I purchased was the 23" model which happens to have the longest barrel I own.  It is my favorite gun!  Surprisingly carries like a dream.  Wicked with 3.5 magblends and a 660 jellyhead.  You won't be disappointed!

I'm 6'3" and a 23" barrel is short enough for me. 23" is a happy middle ground for the 20" and 26" barrels.

From a pattern and velocity stand point all other things equal the longer barrel should pattern better. However, with today's chokes and ammunition, short barrels are in now way a handicap.
