I always keep my gas receipts so I went through them last night after I filled up. I filled up the 14th, 18th, and 21st which is a 7 day period. I spent $245! Lets see. Theres 5 weeks of hunting so $245x5= $1225 just fuel not counting food. It aint going to stop me cause I love it to much but no wonder I'm broke :bike2: Anybody else feeling the pinch? I drive a 2005 V6 Tacoma so it isnt exactly a gas hog.
what are you paying per gallon??

It is $3.88 where I fill up. I drove 133 miles this morning round trip and its not my furtherest spot! Theres a really good farm about a mile below my house that is loaded with birds. Maybe next year I should just toss him $1500 and save me the drive and get more sleep ;D
i know the feeling. my z71 gets 12-14 MPG.
Its 52 miles to work round trip. So 260 miles a week to go to work. I will keep track of my mpg and mileage driven next week.

Ouch... Payin 3.74 here, and my car gets 20+/-. I also drive a hell of alot less than you...
So far in Maine I haven't had any problems finding land to hunt on, alot isn't posted, and you don't need permission to hunt unposted land.
It is getting alittle pricey. I made the mistake of going to ATs when I wore out my stock tires and dropped to 15mpg from 17-17.5(GMC 4x4 5.3L). 150 mile round trip to the camp and I'm only getting around 13-14 when hunting. Fun fun.

Ronnie I'm running AT's as well. Thats what came on it and its what I've always put back. When it was new I was getting about 21-22. Now with all gas stations here selling 10% ethanol I have dropped to 17-18. I wish I could switch to Highway tread but most of my places require 4x4 to get to if its the least bit wet.
My trip to south Florida totaled up 2440+/- miles and cost around $650-700 in diesel.
Months that I do not go anywhere but to work, I spend $1k+ on fuel. If I hunt hard, add another $500 onto that. If the wife and I do a weekend away, add another $250 to that!
You just gotta love Chevy's!
I replaced my stock tires with 285/18's last year. I never got such bad mileage. Couldn't get them off fast enough. Went with 275/18's and got my mileage back.
I don't even think about towing the trailer with the buggy on it, mileage drops to 8-10 mpg
Heck I couldn't stand it and I own a gas station. I will drive 150 miles per day turkey hunting 6 days a week. Yes I am still paying for the gas, just off the bottom line, not directly out of my pocket.
Also running ATs on my f-150 5.4 thats y Im back to driving my little ugly as heck car, even turkey hunting lol just gotta get their earlier bc gotta walk farther but it saves on gas.
I hunted three days this weeks. Its about 150 miles round trip. It cost me roughly about $35 bucks a day for gas, plus drinks and snacks. I have birds around my house but there are more people chasing them than there are turkeys, so I guess its worth the drive. Me and a buddy have 1200 acres all to ourselves. Not a ton of birds but you don't have to worry about other people.
It is at times like these I am happy that I hunt out of a '05 Neon that gets 30mpg......its the other times when I cant get into places that it ticks me off.
Well here in Ohio I gave 4.19 a gal yesterday and 70 dollars gave me around half a tank. I drive a 2006 F250 power stroke and really my Fule mileage isn't to bad it's the 38 gallon Fule tank that gets in my pocket . I get around 650 miles per tank. I usually fill up every 2 weeks. It also helps all my hunting is done in less then 15 mins from my house.
Gas prices are killing all of us and I don't see it getting any better....
Signed,
your broke friend
I drive a 2000 Chevy Z71 with 285s on it $3.60 avg? but my lease is 20 minutes from my house so a $20 bill gets me there and back! And my buddy is on the same lease and we take turns driving! But ya my buddies in middle TN I always enjoy hunting with but gas has got me thinking about the trip this year. I might get to slip up there!

Retired and gas prices are killing me lets all vote for Obama so we can keep on buying high gas. :goofball: :goofball:
I live in central Illinois, gas today went up to 3.97 in town and 4.06 by the highway I55. That is for the cheap regular stuff if you want to call it that...I only drive 13 miles round trip to hunt and about 60 miles a week to work. But I drive a z71 :'(

Did you have your speedometer adjusted? Running larger diameter tires will make it read slow and your mileage will appear worse, but actual mileage might not have changed.

Mine came with the 20" aluminum wheels and 275/55/20 GY LS2 street treads. I put 80K on those tires, but bumble bee spit on green grass would call for 4x4. I pulled them and put some Cooper Zeon LTZ ATs of the same size on her and the mileage went down the tubes. 15mpg HWY is a bummer with today's prices. I put around 25k+ on one every year, so it would probably be worth it to chunk the new tires and go back to a less aggressive tread. I'd prob save the cost of a new set of tires in less than a year.
Talked to someone that had Pirelli ATs of the same size and he said his mileage was good, but the tires did look like street treads. The LTZs are darn near like mud grips. I used to get 18-19 on trips with the LS2s and even logged 21-23 on a trip to WY. This year I never broke over 16.9 and mostly around 16 on my hunting trips.

I average just a little more than 25,000 a year like you. My last set were the pirelli scorpion ATRs. They did decent. Decent traction but mine wore fast and sometimes I would have to put in 4x4 in a dry field if it was a slight incline. The BF AT's that came stock were shot within 30,000 miles
Just hit the big $4.18 today here in good old Indianapolis, once it hits $5.00 a gallon everybody will become a republican

The key to getting decent mileage out of an aggressive tire is run the tire pressure as close to max PSI as possible, without causing too much wheel hop. Light truck tires, especially the D and E range tires, can run max PSI up to 65-80lbs. Running them below 40 will add a lot of rolling resistance and chew into your mileage. I'm running 285/75/16's Nitto Terra Grappler E's on a 1/2-ton Silverado...not ideal, I know, but I'm running 55 PSI in the front and 45 PSI in the back, and I'm getting 18-19MPG (adjusted) on the highway. Any more pressure in the rear, and she gets a little scary with the bunny hops on rough pavement. Taking them down to 40 PSI yields only about 15-16 MPG.
I have an all wheel drive tahoe,i went from indy to KY and back on $230.our spots were only 4 miles from the house, not to bad..i'll take my 4 banger ranger from now on...i'm over the gas prices!!!
It is $4.19 a gallon here in Michigan, and I drive a 1500 ram getting 15mpg (with a good tailwind) and I have to drive 40 miles one way to work (South) and 35 miles (North) to my main hunting land..... It's tough to complain here in Michigan though, I am thankful everyday to be working for a solid company when so many others have lost theirs.
$4.05 for 87 octane here today. If the trend continues it will be $4.07 tomorrow. I drive an '04 Chevy Silverado 4X4 5.3l v8. I'm back up to about 17 mpg after I dumped the M+S tires and want back to a HT(both same size). I also run synthetic oil and a K&N air filter. I have got up to 19.5 mpg straight thurway during the summer months.
The extras are starting to go as I haven't had a contract or raise since 4/1/05 but still I'm happy to be working and have health care benefits.
I going to have to combine hunting days or carpool for turkey season. My property is 133 miles round trip.
CB
399.9 in Lancaster Ohlo today. :angry9: :angry9:
I'm still trying to decide if I can justify spending the extra money for a KS trip in a couple of weeks. It is about 7 hours each way with a $120 out of state tag. I have filled 2 tags there for the last 2 years and have a number of private properties to hunt... just haven't decided if I can afford the trip... man that hurts...
I am a little worried, I leave next Monday to go for a week vacation turkey Hunting and will bring my Travel Trailer along. I have a Ford F250 with a V10 and the milage sucks but I can pass others going up hills.
I just figure that is the cost to hunt and keep the wife happy.
Gas is in the $3.95 range here.
Haven't thought about that Stink. I was running 30 in the LS2s and getting good mileage, usually 17-17.5 for daily running. I'm running 36 in the LTZs. I may run them up to 40-42 and see how it rides. I know the LS2s rode much better at 30 than they did at 35. The LTZs seemed fine at 36, so I left it be.
5,970.4 miles driven and just under 420 gallons of diesel burned since March 15th and we ain't done yet.
My wife just about had a cow when March's gas bill came.........she's definitely not gonna like this months.
Fuel always seems to go up around this time every year, $4.00 a gallon SUCKS!

That's the very reason I sold my Diesel. I loved it, but don't haul often enough to justify paying another 40 cents a gallon for fuel.
And to think diesel used to be cheaper...

Yep, a byproduct of gasoline that has somehow become laced with gold since '06
I bought an '05 Dodge 4x4 crew cab with the Cummins and the thing was a beast. For several months I was able to buy diesel for less than gas just as it had been in the past, then they apparently decided gold was a good additive for diesel. When it passed gasoline and hit $4/gal in '07, I traded.
It's killin me $400+ a month in my 07 silverado just for work no play.
if they really want to flush the economy into the cespool ...higher fuel prices will definitly send it to the bottem.
If the president read this he would tell you to buy Chevy Volt!! After all GE needs the money after all the taxes they pay :TooFunny: :TooFunny:
I only wish!!!!!! We're an oil producing country and yet I am now paying $5.15 per Gallon!!!!!!
Filled up this morning at $4.05.9 and two hours later the same station was up to $4.13.9 Not to worry... the Prez is aware of the problem.
i feel you. we're paying between 3.79$ - 3.99$ a gal here in western ky. i drive a 4x4 chevy ext cab. horrible gas milage. on a good day 12.5 mpg. average 11-11.5. and its expecting to rise even more. with the floods here i can't hunt locally. i have to drive to higher ground which would be Land between the Lakes and to my hunting spot its roughly 50 mile trip there.

As long as you're not running them higher than the max cold pressure listed on the sidewall, you should be fine.

They might be basing that on the suggested tire pressures listed for your vehicle. If your Terra Grapplers aren't stock (I'm assuming they aren't), just look at the max cold pressure value on the sidewall. Either way, you may not experience much mileage difference between 35 and 45 PSI, but when the sidewalls on my TG's show any flex (around the 40 PSI mark and under), the mileage sinks. You'll just have to experiment.
