Title: New Pot Call
Post by: Buckman18 on February 24, 2018, 08:34:18 PM
My birthday is coming up soon, and it just so happens I have room for one more pot call in my new turkey vest...

Leaning toward the Knight & Hale Moonshiner or Ol Yeller, but open to ideas/suggestions...

Luckily, my wife knows nothing about turkey hunting so I get to tell her exactly which one to order. Which one should I get? Or perhaps you have a better thought, my limit for myself is about $50.00 or so.

I'd go with one of the guys on here over any mass produced call. Just my .02

10-4, certainly open to that!

However, I have a problem. I'm brand new here and don't know anyone yet!

What do you have already? What do you like? Slate, glass, aluminum? Not sure

Just pot calls do you have any boxes?

I have glass, slate, and aluminum pots. The slate and aluminum, couldn't be more happy with. The glass, so so. Plenty of boxes and mouth calls.

If you told me to get one of my calls and go kill that turkey that's what I would take

I'll too my own horn or call in this case and say you can get one of my High Standard calls for $49.95 new.  I'll put it against any crystal or aluminum out there

I can vouch for Gooserbat's pot calls. I've never ran his High Standard series but I have his Ol Hickory glass and it's a good call.

Btw, I have a Mooshiner and I hunted it quite a bit. It won't get much love here on OG being it's a production call but it's a good call nonetheless.

Since I build them I'll say that as good as the Ol'Hickory is the High Standard is far better.

I agree buy a custom...that being said the moonshiner is the best production pot I've ever ran and is solid.

X3... I have over 50 pots from all the coutom call makers. But the cheap Moonshiner is the one I will grab first on opening morning. Its a real meat call.

I got 3 of them last year for about $15 each. Saw them in academy last week for 45.00... . I guess the word got out!

If you're happy w the slate and aluminum you won't be for long on here! Always another call that's guaranteed to bring birds running it seems. If you want glass or crystal than start there but if you've never had customs it's not gonna end there.
Mark Cornelious and Dustin Jones make decent glass calls. SS bronzed glass is real good too, so is Halloran sugartown sweetness for glass. That call (sugartown)is two sided and the back is slate. May be a cool option. None of those are crazy expensive. Other calls you may not have thought of is Halloran ceramic. Call is awesome. Bunch of aluminum's. Schafer makes some ive had great luck with. Aluminum comes beaded or slick and they sound way dif to me.
Another pretty cool call, one you prob have none that sound just like it and it's cheapish, Dawkins stoned aluminum in a plastic pot.
I've used it on not great sound mornings if you know what I'm saying and the sound it generates seems to pierce the woods.
Course there's crystal. Lots of good ones, the crystal mistress already mentioned is one of the best, all of the makers I mentioned are real good and close to what you want but perhaps slightly higher. Classifieds here is a good spot to lower a price
All great calls.

It is an awesome pot call for sure. I can't believe I don't hear more people talking about it. I was impressed with it just a side note if you get one it doesn't come with a conditioning screen so you will need to get something to condition it.Its no big deal unless you are new to pot calls and don't know you have to scratch it up or it won't talk at all

There are a lot of great pot calls available today Gooserbat that was mentioned above is a great call. Some other makers that I really like calls from are Chris Brumfiel,Misfire calls, Mike Yingling and SS custom calls are all top notch and fill most of my call needs. I have some other ones from other makers but these guys are the ones I give most of my business to.

Some things to consider:
Pot calls have been perfected in the last couple of decades to a degree that many, if not most, are perfectly capable of reproducing turkey sounds,...if paired with the right striker and kept conditioned properly.
Production calls may or may not be paired with the best striker for that call.  They are massed produced, and thrown in a package with a standard striker that may not be the best pairing for the call.
Custom call makers will/should run every call they make,...and with an assortment of strikers,...and then send you the best combination of the two,...and obvious benefit.
Regardless, the guy running the call makes a big difference.  A great call in the hands of someone that really hasn't spent the time to learn how to run it is worse than the guy that's using a cheap production call that knows what he's doing.
Practice running whatever calls you want to use so you develop the ability to understand the sounds you want to make (that varies a lot with different folks) and can make them consistently.  When you get to that point, you will be able to pick up all but the worst pot calls, pair them with the right striker, and call turkeys with them.
After that, the choices of calls is just a matter of personal preference.

Wow! What a tremendous response! Thank you all!

I decided on both, the Moonshiner and custom!

I ordered me an acrylic pot from Patterson Calls in nearby Jasper, GA. I know Drew, and he has built several for me in the past to call in these southern Appalachian limb hangers.

Again, thank you all, And I look forward to meeting and getting to know y'all in the future!

I just got a glass call from a guy named CJ Cross (look him up on Facebook)  He makes some really nice pot calls at an affordable price.  I can record a sound file and let you hear it if interested.  He does alot of videos on his Facebook page.
