Title: Need advise on marlin watkins fiddle box
Post by: Fl strutter on January 17, 2018, 07:11:17 PM
Just got on his list and would like y'alls opinion on wood combos from him. Looking for a nice high/medium pitch with not a lot of rasp. If anyone has some soundfiles that would be awesome. Thanks.

All of Marlin's calls for the most part that I own or have heard have been fairly raspy. Raspy in a good way.. That being said the most recent one I received from Marlin was Bloodwood over Pear which is a wonderful combo. Some of the files he sent me this last time were Mora/Butternut, PH/Cedar, and also Bloodwood/Beech. Mora over Butternut had the least amount of rasp out of those listed and was the combo I had originally asked for until I heard the bloodwood/pear. As me and my buddy Sixbird on here have discussed, whatever call you think you may want from Marlin will more than likely change to something completely different the day he messages you that you are up!

10 4 thanks. I've heard great things about his calls. I'm not a fan of a lot of rasp bit some. Looking forward to hearing from him.

Give him a call.  Marlin is a great guy and will gladly help you pick out what you want.

His calls are great and hard to go wrong with any. Over the years I've had a bunch but I always seem to carry a bloodwood over butternut or carnarywood over poplar

I'm waiting patiently for him to call me saying I'm up. Looking for a soft talker with not a lot of rasp.

His Bubinga/Applewood is the best sounding box call I've ever heard. Followed closely by his Bloodwood/Mineral Stained Poplar

Marlin will definitely have something you are looking for... Along with something you are not, which will leave you thinking you have got to have that one too.

Any box from him is a killer. I own 7 of his fiddle boxes and will say my favorite is Ipe over Butternut. You will not get a bad call from him.

Bloodwood lid on most anything he makes,  but goes good with butternut. I hear his bloodwood/pear is out of this world.

Won't get a bad call. Marlin won't let anything less than his best call out of the shop.

I was on his list for a paddle call, when he had a few complete he called me and talked about what was available then sent me the sound files for each. He did a great job of explaining each call. After that I ended up getting a Limba with IPE paddle, which is the same he won the 2012 nationals with and has been one of his favorite compos.

All of Marlins are great,  but if he is still making calls with Hop Horn Beam, they are great.

If you tell Marlin what you're looking for, he'll fix you up...
I know a year ago or so, he said he was making a chate viga that was really high pitched. He said some of the guys up in New England were knocking them dead with them...

My Chakte Viga over Black Limba saw a lot of vest time last year. Birds responded very well to it.

Maybe he knocks certain people off his list as certain combos are made. I think it was June when him and I last talked about a couple combos for him to ship up here to VT. Congrats again, I am sure it won't be your last.

I played probably 10 of his calls today at the convention and I'd be satisfied with any of them.

Well I got my box today. It plays a lot different than the preacherman boxes I'm use to. The rasp on it is pall the way on the very back end of the box. Having trouble getting it to sound good. Gonna take a lot of practice.

I talked to Don last week and i'm on his list for one....Regardless how it play's or sounds , it's the history of the call maker behind the box.. As most all the people i have talk to all his boxes talk turkey...can't wait to get my call and pick out my box...

its funny how that is but every call builder builds their call a little different, some take effort some are effortless.

when i pick up some short boxes i feel like i got to put allot pressure and effort in it to make it bark. i like a box that just runs effortlessly lol

How are you playing it? Like how are you holding the lid, box orientation etc. I bet we can help you get that thing to sing. If not, you can get your money back by selling it to me! Haha

I'm sold,,after hearing the Soundfile and the unique tone of the bloodwood over Apple,,I ordered one.
This is the first time I've ordered a non checkered neal cost style box which is the styling I love.
But the sound is just too special to not have.
