I had an amazing season this year.. I dropped my first bird hunting by myself! He was an older bird that was pretty smart., rarely gobbled and didn't answer calls. He weighed 17.5lbs, had a 10 1/4" beard and his spurs were 1 3/8" (total score 65.6) my 2nd biggest spurred bird.. all around extremely special to me..
so I let someone that is normally pretty good at cleaning up the spurs hang on to them so he could gt them ready for me., I told him I did NOT want them painted.., and when I went back to pick them up... guess what., they was painted ???? yes they look pretty good painted but I'm not the type that likes my spurs painted.. I want them to look like they did originally.. I'm gonna upload some pics.. b4 and after and any advice is greatly appreciated..

Great bird - well done.
Darn shame about the spurs. I wold guess if you can find someone with a media blasting cabinet they would hit this with some walnut shells or another soft media on lower pressure and clean 'em up.
Also, you should kick the person that did that in the nuts.
yea I'm extremely upset about it... I hope I can gt them back to how they originally looked...

Nice bird. What kinda paint did he use??
Nice gobbler. Easy fix on the spurs boil them for about 10-20min. this will not harm the spur and will make spur cap separate from bone and will proabably loosen paint. If not soak bone in paint thinner tilll paint comes off then wash with dish soap. I put mine in peroxide for a couple days makes them white but not the shinny paint white. You could also not peroxide them and just glue spur cap back on only thing is over time the leg bone will turn a yellow or brown color from handling and age .. up to you.
All i do with mine is clean them up and use clear figure nail polish...on the spurs .... those look pretty bad painted....sorry he did that....good luck
Yea I'm not worried about the bone turning color all mine have that yellow color I just want the spur to look like it did when I got him., not like he went and had a pedicure

The boiling method is easy and the peroxide really turns the bone white. Some like it natural and some really white. I have both and like both methods.
Hopefully you can boil them and the paint will come off. Good luck and nice Bird.
Also in the future when you get some more nice spurs, a hacksaw is the cleanest way to cut the leg bone, makes a clean cut.

Congrats on the bird :icon_thumright:
You might try a little lacquer thinner or finer nail polish remover and see if that won't loosen that paint enough that you can wipe it off. If not the walnut media idea might work as well if you know someone that reloads centerfire cartridges they may have a brass tumbler.
Nice bird. I agree with the clear nail polish on spurs.
Thanks everybody... I'm just sick about it.., can't believe it!
I do have a question tho.. my daddy always had me wash with kerosene when I got paint on me... the paint came off never hurt my skin tho.. I wonder if it would work in this situation without hurting my spurs? Hmm.. I think I may try it on some of his painted spurs first tho!

I think if you do that they will always smell like kerosene ...
Birds gotta be degreased before mounting. I've actually seen guys use gas. Not something I've done or recommend but the smell didn't stay forever., kinda think kerosene may not stay smell wise either forever
What I personally might do is, since you haven't mentioned paint type is take some laquer thinner on a qtip n work that on the back away from the spur. I'll bet it breaks paint up. It may be time consuming but a little at a time n it'll come off. You've mentioned you wanted em natural. That's good. If you decide to try whitening though don't use bleach, it chemically changes bones n can cause flaking down the road
acetone or rubbing alcohol may work also....
I would not start with Paint Thinner. I would try some fingernail polish remover first. Not knowing the type of paint is the issue. Goof Off Pro sold in hardware stores in a small can would be my next step.
Take a spur you may not care as much about and test each on a bare one to make sure the impact is to your liking. Good luck.
thanks again guys ... really appreciate you all taking the time to try to help me figure this out!
If I was to try the kerosene I'm not gonna try it on my spurs first.. and if I was to use it... I would for sure wash them in dawn dish soap afterwards...
I kno whatever I decide to do., I will try it first on some of his spurs considering that he done this time mine

Paint thinner will not damage the bone nor will kerosene
Thank u!!!

just take a pocketknife and scrape the paint back off...simple
Nice Gobbler ! I would try paint remover, don't think it would harm them, maybe try on one that's painted to test, but am thinking that since they are new and painted recently should come off easily, let us know what you end up doing, good luck.
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170510/f828a470b89d34e0a1daf89065c91909.jpg) looking any better??

Yes I think so
Great!! I think so too, not done yet but wanted to show y'all! I'm not so worried about the bone right now mainly just the spur and now that u can actually see the spur I'm feelin n better about it :)

Acetone will be your friend. It'll work! Did the guy let his dog chew the spurs off the leg? That cut is nearly as bad as the paint. Did he say why he painted them after you told him you didn't want that done? Congrats on a fine gobbler!
he is normally really great at it., and I guess where this bird was so special to me I got a little more upset than I should have, but anyhow I guess what happened is simply this he has two messed up arms., (well a broken wrist and a broken arm) and when he cracked the bone he used jb weld to fix it and then when he realized he got some on the spur he decided he'd paint them!

I have a box full of natural spurs that take me all of ten minutes to have them finished off a fresh leg.
Cut leg off high with loppers.
Put leg in bench vise and use hacksaw to remove the section of leg you want to keep.
A few slices with a razor knife in the right area removes scales and tendons in short time.
Brass wire wheel on a bench grinder cleans everything of the bone. (use leather gloves)
Wash with dish detergent. Rinse and dry well.
Rub a little borax into the bone to suck any excess moisture.
I have 20 some years worth of spurs in my spur box and they all look like they did the day I killed them.
What a shame about your spurs. 1 3/8" are a monster set of hooks
Nice bird! That is a shame about the spurs, i don't understand paint on spurs. Post some pics after you get them straightened out.
Still a nice set of hooks! Hope you can get them restored!
If you use a soft brass brush and keep doing what you are doing they will be back to perfect in no time.
Use a dremel on low speed to clean up the shoddy work he did on those cuts.
Try one of those 4 sided fingernail polishers. I've used in on claws and bones with good results.

Those are some awesome Spurs!

Congrats on the bird. Your guy did a number on the spurs. He not only painted them, but looks like he chewed the bone in two with his teeth. I'd experiment with lightly scraping the paint off a small area of the spur. I'm sure you can clean them up somehow. A little steel wool will help after you do some scraping. I'd use boiling as a last resort. Afterwords I'd take a file to the bone and clean the edges up.
this is how they look so far... tell me what ya think... (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170511/8d2bfcbd38865fa69ea3ce3f607d4444.jpg)

I'd let them soak in acetone overnight, and I bet you could remove the rest of that white paint on the bone with a q-tip.

well the thing about tho is that the bone part will have to continue to be painted bc he cracked the bone to where it can't be added to my spur necklace ... so he used jb weld to fix it.. which is why he decided to paint em in the first place.. but I'm not real worried about the bone being painted ... the spur on the other hand I don't won't ANY of my spurs painted period... but if I remove the paint from the bone they'll look like hell..

go back a few pics and u can see the jb weld..

I'd call it good then.
I missed that you'd already got them cleaned up. Nice job.

Thank u.. I'm still gonna do a lil more work to them but I'm happy that I've got all the paint off the actual spurs... I can live with em as they are now :)

You could tape the spurs and paint the bone a different color white, getting the rough edges smooth, and call it done.

the paint I used is like an off-white/ivory color closest to the bone color that I could find without truly going on a perfect paint search.. it's nowhere near as white and shiny as what he originally used on the bone

I cut my spurs off with a hacksaw, peel the skin and as much tissue off as I can with a knife, then polish and sand them with a dremel tool.
I think you could shape them with a dremel even with the jb weld and it might not be noticeable at all. I use kilz II primer on European mounts. That might look better than ivory paint.
This is about a sorry a job that I've ever seen!! Irriguardless if he had two broke arms!!! Spurs like those are hard to come by!! This is what I do with mine. A little effort goes a long way! Peroxide the bone and after they dry, sand them down and then clear coat!!

Yea, I couldn't believe it., he normally does a great job.. and he has helped me to gt them back to where they need to be... of course the bone is painted but I'm not as worried about the bone as I am the spur itself... I'm happy that we could gt the paint off of the spur.. they're a very special pair all the way around ...
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Definitely better. A dremel tool with a small wire brush can help you get the remaining paint off the bone, and the sanding tool on one could help you smooth off those end cuts.
Congrats on a great bird!
