Can't kill em on the couch
You can sleep when you are dead.
Just about anything Fred Bear said:
A hunt based only on trophies taken falls far short of what the ultimate goal should be . . . time to commune with your inner soul as you share the outdoors with the birds, animals, and fish that live there.
The very remoteness kindles the imagination of the adventurous hunter. From the top of any mountain the challenge extends far and wide, until the mountains meet the sky.
Deer hunting fills my freezer, turkey hunting fills my heart
Listening to the woods wake up (I know my daughter who was only a toddler at the time I started to take her scouting spring birds didn't create this phrase but she said it a lot)
What fun would it be if they all came running to the call....
Brother in laws. When we are hunting in Missouri, we hear a bird that sounds like it is a mile away. He always says
" if it is the only show in town lets go get a front row seat."
One of my best friends Dad told me this year's ago,
"It only takes one." Then he headed to the woods in a downpour.
I still hear it to this day whenever I'm considering skipping a hunt from bad weather or lack of recent success.
"If he gobbles I'll kill him"
Yeah, ok big dawg!
"A bird in the hand is worth 2 in the bush"
"It doesn't matter what you shoot if you don't have anything to shoot at."

"You can't eat tracks"

Anytime you see a small fish, buck, jake .....or whatever acting like he's the boss:

Aim small miss small.

My wife of age 42 who died from cancer seven year later made us aware of how precious life is. Made me think of a few; DON'T PUT OFF TODAY WHAT YOU THINK YOU CAN DO TOMORROW. So in other works turkey hunt as much as you can. During her seven year battle we lived it up, we went to Alaska and a tropical Island. And she allowed me my first trip to Florida for my OSCEOLA. And her favoret saying but ran out of time was: EVERY DAY IS A NEW DAY AND EVERY DAY THERE IS A CHANCE OF A MARICAL
It's going to be clear tonight.
Got to get there before the sun comes up over a turkey's arse.
:fud:
"DON'T WIPE WITH THAT!" -Uncle Itchy
"I don't doubt that one bit. 700 pellets flying that fast was like pushing a turkey head through a screen door". -stinkpickle
Hunt with your kids, not for them.
There's a turkey behind every tree.
Do you wanna hear him gobble or do you wanna kill him.
Somewhere out there a Gobblers wrappin his toe's around a limb for the last time.
"If you think you can kill the bird, do not shoot. Wait till you know you can kill him."
My father
Wing-shooting after missing 3 easy shots and yelling to the bird:
"And don't come back!"

My favorite quote I say to a turkey when I hear him gobble for the first time - "say it again"
Pawpaw hearing one saying- "was that over there?" (Pointing the wrong direction)
I am helpless in the grip of my compulsion.
Tom Kelly
After I settle in and am waiting for the first whistle of wings when duck hunting or waiting on hearing Tom let the ladies know he is awake and open for business, I say this verse in silent prayer.
This is the day the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it. Ps118v24
Makes killing the bird less important and enjoying His creation the focal point of the hunt. And of course, sometimes I say it and still ignore it, but I try and the older I get the more I follow that advice.
Every time I see a strutting gobbler my mind says....
"He's puffed up like Roseanne Barr at a pig pickin'...."

Never pass up a (deer/turkey/etc) on opening day that you'd be happy with on the last day.
Who cooks for you, who cooks for you two?
Every step you take towards a gobbler is one less step he'll have to take to get to you...
That saying goes through my head just about every time I go to set up on a bird.
I've hunted turkeys for 30 years and have come to the conclusion that..."A turkey will do what a turkey wants to do".

My most frequently used quote is "Darn Turkeys". ....Okay, the first word in that phrase is usually quite a bit more colorful and varies in the number of descriptive terms, volume, and duration,...all of which are not repeatable here,...but you get the picture... :toothy12:

Going to put the " Mohican sneak on him"
He has to be perfect every day, you only need to do everything right one day. Each hunt, ask yourself what you could have done different. When you think you have a turkey, or turkeys in general, figured out - you are wrong. They are random and wary with excellent hearing, excellent eyesight. The chink in their armor is they really really really want to breed. They are not intelligent, but they can and will learn.
"He's dead, he just don't know it yet"
My Dad
While out scouting with my son the other day when one gobbled he said,
"That's one bird that has an appointment for a TSS facial in a few days."
If a bird gobbles at your call he's already half dead, you just gotta complete the other half.

My favorite. You have to be a turkey hunter to understand it.
"You know why turkeys (and deer) always seem to come in behind you?
...You're facing the WRONG WAY!! :goofball:
From my daughter..."Hey dad, I saw a chubby turkey in the field this morning on the way to school."
She calls stutters, chubby ones, so now I do too!

"A peculiar virtue in wildlife ethics is that the hunter ordinarily has no gallery to applaud or disapprove of his conduct. Whatever his acts, they are dictated by his own conscience, rather than a mob of onlookers. It is difficult to exaggerate the importance of this fact." --Aldo Leopold

As a frequent black powder turkey hunter, the following is always pertinent and frequently rears its ugly head:
"All skill is in vain when an Angel decides to pee in the touchole of your musket " -German proverb
My Dad would say
"He's just turkeying" when something went wrong in a hunt

I have hunted almost every day of my life, the rest have been wasted..
Every day you don't kill one, gets you a day closer to the day you do.
