I just received the press release from Winchester about 20 gauge WLB shells. You can read the full release here
http://allaboutshooting.com/blogs/blog/winchester-adds-a-20-gauge-load-to-the-long-beard-xr-lineup
I should have some of those shells soon and I'll let you know what I see at the range.
Thanks,
Clark
Clark do you have any idea when these might hit the shelves and who will be carrying them? (bass pro, cabelas, etc) Curious what kind of price tag they're going to slap on these things with the great success they've had with the 12's.

I "suspect" that they'll be available shortly after the first of the year, at all those places you've mentioned and more. They'll probably be available at the NWTF Convention & Sport Show in February as well.
It's just a guess but I'd say in the same price range as the 12 gauge shells or slightly less. Both the #5 shot and #6 shot loads have 1.25 oz. of shot and are packaged 10 rounds per box.
There will also be a 2.75" in 12 gauge shell with 1.25 oz of #5 shot.
Thanks,
Clark
Thanks Clark, good news indeed!
Wish it was in 7 shot...but i still welcome the new shell...
Great news
Thanks for sharing Clark!

And I'm almost done setting up my new 20.
Great news and thanks for sharing!

You're welcome. We have a number of 20s that we shoot both in competition and for hunting. A new shell always makes things "interesting".
Thanks,
Clark
That will definitely be interesting to tinker with.

Would these be any different from the Rooster XR? I've been shooting the XR's in my old A5 with great success.
Thanks for the info the 20g WLB. Great news!
its begining to look a lot like christmas!!!!!! I wonder what santa would like to bring me, maybe some new shotgun shells and a new choke!!!! What a great idea!!! cluck

Good question. There may be some differences in velocity, etc. The WLB is only available in #5 shot however, where the "Rooster" is available in #4, #5 and #6 shot.
Thanks,
Clark

I hope Santa hears you! It will be interesting to see how these new 20s respond to different chokes. All just a part of the fun.
Good luck with Santa.
Thanks,
Clark
So how many of you are going to quit shooting hw 7? I know I know, I'm drooling to shoot some of these shells. But I don't think I can leave my hw7. It sure would be hard.

Why has Winchester balked at loading 6's in their 20 ga turkey loads ???
In a 20 especially.......................... hows about a higher pellet count for better pattern density at distance ???

The new WLB 20 gauge shells are available with #6 shot. It's the new 2.75" WLB 12 gauge shells that are available with #5 shot only.
Thanks,
Clark
I'm gonna try them, but they continue to disappoint me with their extended range cdvertising crap.

Clark, any idea on a published velocity rating ?
Thank you Sir !

Not at all. I can see how that was done.
Those new shells should be fun.

You're welcome.
They did not list velocity in the press release for them. I can probably find out and if so, I'll put that information here on OG.
Thanks,
Clark
It will be interesting, indeed.
They will have to be ALOT better for me to change from my HW #7's, however.

Yep! Two different shells indeed. I hope to have some soon and put them through some different chokes.

I sent Winchester an email just after I read your post about the velocity. They responded this morning. It will have a velocity of 1000 fps.
Thanks,
Clark
1000 fps is awfully slow for a turkey load?? :OGturkeyhead:

That's what I thought, can't say I'm real excited about a 1000fps 1 1/4 lead load....
Quote1000 fps is awfully slow for a turkey load??
One of the more interesting principles in the study of the effect of velocity on spheres is that, put simply, the higher the initial velocity, the more quickly that velocity decreases. Since lead shot is generally in the shape of a sphere, that principle applies to the velocity of shot in those shotshells with lead shot.
When we look at the terminal velocity of shot at 40 yards, with a muzzle velocity of 1000-1090 fps and shot with a muzzle velocity of 1200-1225, they are just about the same. Since the terminal energy is a product of the terminal velocity and the weight of the sphere, shot launched at those muzzle velocities also have very similar terminal energy. The advantage to the lower velocity of the sphere (shot) is that there is less disruption to the medium (air) and the shot flies in a more stable manner.
In my discussions with folks in the field who know a lot more about the physics of shot flight than I do, there also seems to be agreement that there is an advantage to patterning when shot does not have a muzzle velocity that exceeds the speed of sound, 1090 fps, since within 40 yards it will drop below that speed and become even less stable.
Thanks,
Clark
^^ Great info Clark! Thanks for your knowledgeable input.
Can't wait to see what they do at 60-70 yards because we all KNOW that's the new 40 yrds...according to Winchester. :z-guntootsmiley:

If you are worried about 1000 fps, just shoot you some TSS, or Fed HWT, you can run those at 900 fps, and still kill past where you should be shooting!
WE DON'T NEED NO STINKIN WLB!!

i might have to look into those ;) I'm still waiting for the press release saying they are using the high density shot in the 20ga offerings, I would buy a case of those if it said 600 fps velocity
Dear Santa, please bring me some winchester long beards in 20 gauge!!!!! Lead does still kill at forty !! Make it 10 in a box and cheaper than the other stuff. :blob10: :santaclaus: cluck
