Title: Missed!!!
Post by: chow hound on April 29, 2015, 01:28:01 PM
I know everyone said it would happen sooner or later if you turkey hunt enough, but had my first miss ever at a bird standing at 20 yds!  Would have been my 3rd bird of the year and limit for VA.  First year using a turkey choke and thinking I like my big pattern better! :z-dizzy:

Here's a news flash for you.....if you continue to turkey hunt.....YOU WILL MISS AGAIN!
This was my 34th spring gobbler season and I missed 2 this year....first ones in a few years, but it happens....and it will happen again! But I don't get upset line u used to because I actually won....I beat the bird at his own game if I had him close enough for a kill shot, pulling the trigger is the easy part (even though I muffed it)
Don't get me wrong I still get that WTH feeling....and I know why I miss.....I get excited watching the gobbler and don't get my cheek down in the stock, which results in me shooting over the bird.
Good luck in your future hunts and don't get discouraged on the miss......Chootem in da face!

that's a good point about getting your head down.  Fortunately, with my shotgun/red dot set-up I can slightly see the front bead of my shotgun through the red dot.  I sighted in the red dot with that bead center and at the very bottom of the sight and trained myself to first look for the bead and make sure it is where it should be, then aim red dot at target.  it is like second nature to me now and I can do it in a split second.

Remember shoot ... then look ... keep your dot on the head with a turkey choke you are shooting a tighter pattern.

Missed my second ever this year, sawed off an unseen sapling half way to him!    I have missed a few archery birds though!

Don't beat yourself up over it.

I had a long streak on consecutive seasons without a miss and that ended 2 years ago and also last year.  2 years ago I missed one on the first shot but got him on the second.  Last year, I clean missed one and watched him fly off only to fill my final tag on the last day of the season.

Don't get discouraged and remember, it's probably going to happen again.

Hopefully I didn't jinx myself with this post.  Our season opens Friday.

Your not alone!! I missed one 2 weeks ago and haven't seen a long beard since!!  I simply rushed the shot.
My wife missed 3 straight, but she's killed the last 3 she's pulled the trigger on so I believe we are passed that!!
The best part of a miss is that you didn't have to punch the tag!!! :z-twocents:

Remember shoot ... then look ... keep your dot on the head with a turkey choke you are shooting a tighter pattern.

I was told to do this only at ranges further than 20 yards. Inside this and your patterns may start getting really tight that it would be best to shoot at the base of the neck which would give you some pellets in the neck but also some pellets in the breast vital area.  yes this is not desirable but close range, pellets should be able to penetrate the breast into the vitals.

I went probably 10 years without a miss and began thinking how do people miss so often. Last year missed 2 in the same day must not have been my day.

Yep!

I shot them the other day for the first time. Scary! Really tight pattern @40. First thing I said to myself is a lot of hunters are going to miss with this new load. Good luck and get her Re-dialed in.

I echo what others are saying.. it happens, keep your head up and keep at them. Went to Nebraska last week with my buddy trying to get our first merriams. Long story short, after hunting our tails off we finally got a bird to work for us the last day. I called him into 17 yards and my buddy just smooth missed him. He was sick about it, beating himself up pretty bad. Didn't help him the fact that another one struck and I killed him 15 minutes later. I kept telling him to keep his head up and that he'd be ok. 4 days later in Kansas he killed 2 Rios in one setup. Just like that, on top of the world again!

I killed probably 30 straight without a miss then missed 4 in one year, next year missed 2, next year missed 1, next year missed 4 "longbeard xr's", and here we are this year and im 3 for 3 "knock on wood"
I've got one gun set up shooting double beads that is shooting a very generous pattern. I'm getting around 120 in the 10 and a beautiful 15" pattern. Perfect for hunting.
Then I have a scoped 535 that will do 110 with winchester HV 3.5" 4's, (great hunting pattern as well) I can't seem to find any more of these shells anywhere so I have longbeard 5's in it. It's putting 195 in the 10 and is very easy to miss with in close but will flat tear ones head up at 40. If I can ever stock up on some 3.5" HV 4's I'll never run them longbeards through this gun again

Don't feel so bad. I missed a bird yesterday at 12 yards with a crossbow, but made the shot count on the second bird.
