How many of you have ever shot a multi bearded gobbler? what state would one have the best chance to shoot a multi bearded gobbler? Just one of the things on my turkey hunting bucket list along with the Ocellated gobbler I would like to hunt.
I've harvested several multi-bearded birds in TX, OK and KS over the years. I have a 5 bearded bird from MO. Seems to be more genetic to an area rather than a specific species or state. I would research and find an area that have known multiple beard harvests and hunt that area.
Gman
I've killed a few here and their. Georgia and Alabama. I agree with Gamblinman about it being genetic and more common in certain areas. I hunt one place in Alabama where about 20% of the gobblers are multibeards. But another spot five miles down the road I've never seen one. Seems to be far more common in your southern states.
I've killed 3 Double bearded turkeys. They were killed in Texas, New Mexico, and Kansas.
I've killed probably 8 or 10 multiple beard turkeys in SW Georgia. One had three beards and another had four. All were from the same county.
Killed one with 4 beards in western N.C. know of several more in the area also have bearded hens in the same area.
I've killed 8 or so multi bearded turkeys. Killed a little under hundred turkeys in all. All were Easterns. This day I doubled up on a pair of gobs and both were mulitbearded...... Met my buddy at the truck and he had a double beard. It was a day I won't forget soon 7 beards big beards on 3 toms
I've shot a double bearded in TN and NE, my dad killed a 5 bearded gobbler in TN about 10 years ago
None for me. I've never seen one in the fall glassing them. Guess my areas are void of them
It is a genetic trait and, as such, it can be pretty common in some turkey populations and almost non-existent in others. If you want to improve your chances of killing a multiple-bearded gobbler, look at the record books and note where they come from regularly,...and then go hunt there. ...Or see if Guesswho will take you hunting with him. ;D
I have killed two multi-beards in 50 years of hunting. One had eight and the other, which I got just last year, had five. Both of those birds were taken on out-of-state hunts. Here in NM on my home turf, I would say that most hunters will hunt their entire lifetimes and never even see a multiple-bearded gobbler, much less kill one. I would guess their occurrence here is probably less than one in a thousand gobblers,...possibly even less than that.
Iv killed a couple in Ohio, a couple in West Virginia and one in Kentucky.
After 24 complete years of hunting Gobblers and killing a bunch of birds I have yet to kill a multiple beard bird!! Its just not been in the cards yet....it will happen one day!!
God Bless
It's very common in Rios and Easterns. Perhaps
Why so many in KS. Lots of Hybrids in the state.
Killed bunches in KS. It's very genetic.
To me it's not even a big deal unless
They are really nice, long, and thick.
No multi's for me yet either. :(
My one chance, I was hunting with my ex-girlfriend, called in a gobbler but let her shoot him since she hadn't gotten one yet that year. Of course it ended up being a double beard. ::)
One of these days......
I don't know off hand how many, several, but I killed a triple and two double bearded gobblers last spring. I saw and heard of more multi bearded birds last season than ever before. My nephew and I killed a double double (four gobblers) three of which had double beards in KS last spring. crazy.
This reminded me of a time I witnessed two guys kill two gobblers on a guided hunt in NE once. Both guys were good guys but not very serious about the hunting part, just along for the trip. We glassed two gobblers just over a hill in a pasture. The two hunters went off to make a sneak. The outfitter and I stayed back and waited. Shortly after the two went out of sight we heard pow, pow. We walked in their direction and topped the hill to see the two guys laughing and giving each other a high five in celebration, also there were two big gobblers flopping around about 15 yards apart. The less experienced guy said that he wasn't even sure which of the two birds was his since they had flopped around so much. The more experienced guy walked over to the first gobbler and checked it out pretty good, then walked over to the second gobbler and checked it out pretty good as well. He then returned to the first gobbler, picked it up high and stated " Hey look I got a double beard!". Classic.

I agree. I had a streak a couple years ago that went double, four, four, triple in about a 10 day stretch. And back in the day a buddy and me doubled in Alabama. Two turkeys totaled nine beards and 84" of beard. Now it's like we expect about one out of four to be multibearded. I think in the last 20-25 years I've had one season that didn't produce at least one multibeard.
Dang Rutn, you need to come up and hunt with Lee. He's got a piece of property that produces quite a few.
I'm just thrilled to get some gobblers every year. But I would like to get at least one impressive multibeard with fat, long beards.
Killed a nice double beard two years ago. They are pretty common in my area but never personally seen one with more than two beards.

:agreed:
I have killed them in ms,mo,ks and ne. I would say mo is your best chance. We make a group hunt each spring and at least 1/3 of the ones we kill have multis.
One in TX
I've killed several over the years, most in Arkansas and Missouri. The most beards was 5 on one from Nebraska a couple of years ago.
I think I've killed 4 double beard birds and one 4 bearded bird. All of mine have had spindley second beards and the 4 bearded bird had 2 fairly thin beards and 2 that were only a few hairs. Most impressive of mine had an 11.5 inch beard and a 9.5 inch beard with 1.5 inch spurs. All easterns and all in Maryland.
I arrived in South Dakota a few years back and was doing some driving and scouting and when I pulled into a parking area I could see a hunter coming out toting a gobbler and a bow, so we waited to see what he had. Turned out to be a beautiful snow white merriams with 5 beards and 1 1/4 spurs, which was huge for that area. I hope he knew what a special bird he had.
I've killed one double beard back home in Southern IL. My son killed his companion a moment earlier that had a triple beard. The following season my son killed a double beard in the same area.
Maybe 10-12 over the years....
Shot all over the country....

100 + longbeards over the years and hunted KY, KS and Tenn and killed only 1 with a double beard. I have buddies that hunt the same places I hunt and they have killed several 2, 3 and 4 bearded birds. But they are just not that common in my part of KY.
I've killed two double beards and one triple beard. All were from various parts of Oklahoma.
Me and dad have killed probably around 50 Tom's between the two of us and neither of us have gotten a multi beard. A couple years ago I took a guy that had never killed a turkey in the spring season and he killed a double beard Jake, one beard was like 6.5 in and the other was 4 I believe. I have killed a few other birds there and not one multi beard.
I've hunted/taken gobblers in 6 states and have gotten one double bearded bird, and it was in Washington.
ZERO But the first two birds my nephew killed were both double beards, and he killed them about 2 weeks apart in the same field :z-dizzy: Can't say its really ever mattered to me,I always seem to look at hooks before the beard on a dead bird.
I have shot several multi bearded birds before with the bird having the most was 6 beards.
1 - 5 bearded bird
2 - Triple beards
Numerous double beards
I have never killed a bird with more than 1 beard. Here in upstate ny they dont seem too common. My uncle who got me into turkey hunting and has killed a lot more than me has killed 1 double bearded bird but the main beard was broken off @ 3". I did kill a mature longbeard that didnt have any spurs. Looked like a hens leg.
I have shot two multiple beard turkeys. One bird had four beards and one bird had two beards. Both birds were taken in Georgia.
Several: MD, DE and Texas
Ive not killed a multi beard, but when I was a kid I froze up on a turkey and dad shot it... It had 7 separate beards. I will ask him if he still has it maybe I can get a picture.
that was my first time experiencing an old tom running at me and I wasnt ready. he got to about 10 yds and dad realized I wasnt gonna shoot so he took care of it.
Hooked ever since, I was 7 yrs old
