What do you do for a living?
Just trying to figure out what jobs afford the means and opportunity to hunt as many states as some do.
Retired :turkey2:
I'm a Gigolo. I'm not very good at it so I have plenty of free time.
I'm also retired, and I'm 49... lol
I'm retired, so that affords me the time. My call money goes into a savings account for my spring and fall hunting trips
Lineman. Wish I had more vacation time though so I could hunt a few more states
I have 20 days vacation and 3 personal days. I get another week in a year and a half. :blob10: :blob10: :blob10:
Self employed. You can do whatever you feel like.
Probably most of us dont make much more than average. We just make it a priority during the season to hunt. LOL
I work in a steel mill, work 4 on/4 off schedule. With 3 weeks and a day vacation. Not enough but it will do. ;D
I hunt at least 3 states each spring and usually every day for 5 weeks between Ohio and West Virginia. I have a very understanding wife and kids that love to turkey hunt, so it's just the way we roll. By the end of each spring, we are usually just scraping by. My last job was at a aluminum smelter, which recently shut down. I'd work straight afternoons there during season and burn all my vacation days to hunt states further away.
Now that the plant is shut down, I'm kind of free to explore my options. Obviously I need to support my family but I also need to turkey hunt. That is why I asked the origonal question. Just thought I may get a great job idea from someone. I'm taking some classes now but I know most jobs in my area aren't made for a turkey hunting nut.
Over the years I have worked many jobs so that I could be in the woods every spring. Everything from cutting timber to being a correctional officer at a W.Va prison.
Keep em coming, it's interesting.
home occupant engineer :jackson:
Looking to hunt Wyoming next spring. Spending some time in Gillette this fall and will be doing some turkey recon. If anyone has any hooks out there let me know lol!
Deputy Sheriff and will be retired in 8 years and 4 months at 49 yrs old but who is counting lol!!
I'm a glorified babysitter. Work a lot of comp time hours throughout the rest of the year to allow me the freedom to hunt as much as I want in whichever states I want each spring.
This year was Florida, Tennessee, Virginia, Kentucky, Maryland, Kansas and New York....
I'm 29 years old and I don't have a wife or kids. Hunting is my greatest priority in life and I maximize each season Im blessed to experience. None of us know how many or how few we really have.

Hard to beat being a firefighter if you like to deer or turkey hunt. I'm not one, but one of my good friends/hunting partners is, and now that he's pretty tenured, he can work his vacation in such a way that he's basically off the entire spring with only taking a few days worth of vacation. He also pulls a lot of shifts as trade for other guys that don't hunt during the off season. Basically working a lot of extra shifts in the summer when he could care less about being off.
Regardless of what you do, proper planning and discipline is key. Plan well in advance and be flexible on your options. There are a lot of hunts that can be done of the cheap with a little forethought and homework. Also, try to find a hunting partner(s) that share your desires and hunt to your style, and it really makes thing nice. Not only does it help in sharing the costs, but you can help each other to be successful.
Every hunt I go on is done with much forethought and research. We get it done as cheap as possible. When I say "we" I mean my wife, kids and me. They go where I go. We always hunt public land and always do well. I would just like to be able to hunt a couple more states every spring than what I go now. As far as going on a trip with a buddy, it's just not often in the cards.
Physical Therapist. I try to hunt 3 states a year and at least 1 new state each year.

That's great that you can enjoy those trips with family. Even better.
I work from 2pm till 11pm at a manufacturing plant to pay the bills but, have a lawn service on the side to pay for my turkey hunting. I also have a very understanding wife and son that help out with the lawn service while i'm gone. :fud:
Landscape contractor .. I hunt 8-9 states a year ..
Semi-retired....and loving it.
Gman
Chief Engineer on a Tugboat I work week on week off. Spend most if my time in Florida chasing public land birds. Will save a week for an out of state hunt. This year I went to Texas but normally go to South Carolina to hunt the family farm. Chief
I don't make a fortune single family income but I do cut back through year on things and I live pretty simple you won't see me eating out spending tons of cash at Outback or other high priced eateries I grill my steak at home drive an old Ford truck not having a vehicle payment is money in my pocket every month by this I'm able to hunt some nice places because that is what I enjoy hunting turkeys
I make/sell threads for hunting, spring is our slower time, and I like seeing new countryside.
Semi retired down to one job as a Drinking water plant operator. My second job was my play money so I had to cut back on the out of state trips some but I do 4 day weekends all through the Florida season. Most of them are with other members of OldGobbler.
Retired. I try to hunt 4 or 5 states each year but only hunted 2 this spring. A new grandson changed some plans.
The short answer?
None of your business ;D
But, that wouldn't be nice, so I redact the above statement.
I get 3 weeks vacation, holidays, and comp days for working weekends.
I hunted Iowa for deer this year, and hunted 8 days, traveled 2 days, and used a total of 4 vacation days.
I don't drink or smoke, have no kids, have no fancy trucks or RV's, no boats, no ski skis, etc.
I own a small house with a combined gas/electric bill of $50 per month.
I travel for work, and we get to keep our miles, so I use those miles for other trips.
I rent cheap cars, and eat cheap crap while hunting.
I have a list of 270 public spots in Kansas, and I have not needed 269 of them since I started hunting Kansas in 1998.
I treat myself to self-guided private land spring turkey hunts because I can, and because they tend to be productive without using up all of my vacation time chasing birds on public land.
I've already cut back for various reasons, 4 states this year, but I'll try to travel for spring turkeys as long as possible.
It's all a matter of personal choice, and this is how I choose to spend my cabbage these days...
mudhen
This is a very interesting topic. I am wetland ecologist in Buffalo, NY and work 7am-4pm Monday-Friday. You think it basically gives me weekends to hunt, but if I can roost a bird, I have been able to get it done before a 30 min drive to work!
I have never turkey hunted other states although it is my absolute dream. I accrue 2.25 hours a week and between deer hunting, turkeys and last years snow days...it is very difficult for me to save up the time to take off....I have a grand slam in my future though!
Self employed, i run my own tile laying business.
I hunt two, sometimes three states per year. I have to save money from side jobs all year to do it. :policeman:
With planning, you can keep the costs reasonable.
Operator at a valero oil refinery, shift work allows me two 3 day stretches off and a 7 day off stretch every month, the take a vacation or two during the season and end up with a few whole weeks off during the season.
I have 2 jobs. I've been doing Hvac work for 30 years and have a taxidermy business for about 18. I work every other week Hvac and the other weeks in my shop. I take off a couple months in the spring to mount deer heads and turkey hunt. I also have a savings account just for my turkey hunts. I love spring time!!
Farmer, when it rains I try to go somewhere hunted 3 states this year.
Work in wholesale sales, travel a lot in state and surrounding states, but have a flexible schedule and flexible vacation time.....very fortunate there. I'll take about 10 - 12 days off work for out of state trips in the spring and generally hunt 4 - 5 states other than my own. My wife is understanding as well, though she is tired of it most years by the end of spring. I save money throughout the year, don't miss many days for deer hunting, and put in extra work time when needed to prepare for it. We hunt cheap, eat cheap, camp or stay cheap, and in most states hunt public ground or have gained access to a few pieces of private ground over the years. Now, my boys are getting old enough to tag along on some trips. My hunting is evolving a little with them, and I wouldn't have it any other way.
My hunting is also evolving as my kids get older. I usually take them to another state just for the youth hunts. As long as I'm calling birds to the gun, I'm happy.
Retired..... When I was running my own fishing business in Fl I would hunt FL and then hunt Ga, Al, SC and Va. Some yrs if I had time I would hunt PA and NY....Also have hunted TX, WY and SD.
Further North you go the steeper the hunting grounds and the more competition you have on public land...except for FL. ... Just a matter of planning on going and making it happen..
I just went and got me a SUGAR MOMMA! :funnyturkey:

You might be the smartest fella on here!!!
i work straight 2nd shift and hunt every day. dont be around me after the 2nd week.... i use one week of my vacation to go out of state to hunt. one week is used as 1 day vaction the 3rd is used with crazy woman. i save so much out of paycheck that goes into my hunitng account. camp or stay somewhere cheap. this past spring i drug my pop up to florida and stayed in it. i think it was 125 dollars for the week. lucked up our licences were still good ,we went as week early than last year. saved a bunch.
i think i got 4 more years before i get my 4th week of vacation. however that week will be added to the one i use with she who must be obeyed, yellowstone bound. 2 weeks is better than one trying to see it all and i wont be rushed.....

I'm across the bridge from new martinsville. I'd say our paths have crossed.
I'm fortunate that I am in sales and work from a remote office. With that being said, I have hunted 8-12 states every year for the last 11 seasons and at one time I was tied to an office. I used vacation time and weekends. There are plenty of states I have hunted by getting on a plane on Friday and return on Sunday.
If I didn't hunt as many states every spring, I would probably live in a much nicer house and drive a nicer truck, but to each his own!
I'm a teacher. Probably not something you're interested in but it works for me. My principal introduces me to people as "the guy that disappears every spring and fall." Never hunted another state for turkey yet but will be adding Maryland next year. Going to squirrel hunt in PA this fall with my dogs as well so that might open a door for me with the landowner.
Fire Chief and will be retiring in 7.5 years. Planning to sell everything and purchase a diesel pick up truck and a nice 5th wheel and follow the hunting seasons....... :firefighter: :turkey2:
