Id like to build a few small pot calls for my kids, can anyone give me the basics of building a call with no sound board? I was thinking 2.5-2.750 playing surface. Not sure where to start on that. Any info would be great! Thanks!
You will have much better luck with a sound board, its not easy getting one to sound right without one. It can be done but its not easy.
With building a soundboardless call, your almost better build them a trough call style, it will produce a much better sound than a pot style will. If you decide to build a pot call style, then you have to build it a lot thinner in heigth than a regular call, and thin the bottom of the call out to work as the soundboard, instead of a 1/4" thick bottom you may need to thin it down to 3/16 or less, depending on what the call is made of. Most boardless calls are 3-1/2 to 3-1/4 surface to allow the surface to flex enough and drowned out that high pitch sound you get with out having a soundboard in it, a small surface will be super high pitched because it's too stiff. If you use a small surface, cut out a piece of duct tape and stick it to the bottom of the surface, that will dull the high pitched sound and make it a bit better, otherwise your bottom of the call would be less than 1/16 thick. Take the DD Adams calls, they are about 3/8 to 1/2 tall because there's no soundboards in them, where a normal call is 3/4 to 7/8 tall.
Thanks for the info! It sounds like a challenge!
Not trying to steal this thread, it's full of interesting info so thanks ahead of time. I'm interesting in trying a purr pot type call , and I was wondering do they usually have soundboards cause I was thinking they were like stated here just a single surface . Just interested thanks again Jason

Some do and some don't, depending on what the call is shaped like. A few have a very soft wood soundboard in them to help dull the sound and keep the call at a low pitch. A few are shaped similar to a tube call shape, that is small in dia. but twice as tall as a pot call with a tiny hold drilled in the bottom to let the sound out. That creates a deeper hollow soft tone, if they have a soundboard in them it will be glued solid to the walls and a hole drilled in the center like the baffle in a tube call.
