Well I finally had time to work on my 870 20 ga and finish it up. It's not put all back together, but I though I would share the journey.
It somewhat started here (without the FF2)
(http://i1031.photobucket.com/albums/y372/Gophert/Hunting/DSC_0375.jpg) (http://s1031.photobucket.com/user/Gophert/media/Hunting/DSC_0375.jpg.html)
Then I added an ATI Stock
(http://i1031.photobucket.com/albums/y372/Gophert/Hunting/DSC_0373-1.jpg) (http://s1031.photobucket.com/user/Gophert/media/Hunting/DSC_0373-1.jpg.html)
Then I found a Knoxx stock and ditched the ATI

and finally got to camo dip it myself. It was a job, but I couldn't ask for it to look any more professional
(http://i1031.photobucket.com/albums/y372/Gophert/IMAG0253_zps09852df0.jpg) (http://s1031.photobucket.com/user/Gophert/media/IMAG0253_zps09852df0.jpg.html)
I've got to add the clear coat and then reassemble and it will be ready to roll.
Enjoy,
Tim
Looks good, I finished browning silver a few weeks ago. I was happy with the way mine turned out.
Tim,
That came out fantastic! Better than some off a showroom floor!
Great work!!!!! :icon_thumright:
Can't wait to see it all put back together! :icon_thumright:

Thanks Mike. I have been reading about hydro camo dipping for over a year before I got up enough nerve to dip my gun. It's not the actually dipping that is the problem, it's the prep work. If you don't use the right paint and do it in the right time frame it will look like crap. So, after all the study, I did it yesterday and it most definitely turned out great. I had to do a little touch up here and there, but looked every bit as good as my factory 870 12 ga in realtree.
I bought extra film with my kit and the kit had plenty of activator for 2 guns plus some extra. as far a the primer/base there was not enough of .. But I went to Walmart and bought the base/primer and a flat clear coat and finished my browning abolt with it.. There is no way I will pay anyone else to dip one for me. But I wool say you are right there is alot of prep, what did you use to plug the barrel off with? I even dipped my pure gold choke because the blueing wore off the end and it was very reflective.

Eric,
I taped the receiver end and then took a wooden dowel rod and wrapped gradual tape around it and shoved it in tight. I wasn't too concerned about getting water in there however. I was mainly doing it to have something to hold on to when I dipped the barrel. I may do may choke next. My daughter is still trying to decide if she wants her gun dipped. Her's is still black and she likes it that way I guess.
That's a great job !! Well Done !! :icon_thumright:
vaturkey :newmascot:
EVERY TIME THERES HARD WORK INVOLVED AND THE RESULTS TURN OUT REAL , REAL GOOD . IT MAKES IT ALL WORTH IT , LOOKS REAL GOOD :icon_thumright: :icon_thumright:
That looks great, been contemplating trying it myself or sending my shur-shot stock off to get dipped. Not sure which way to go on that, might just have to try it myself.

gophert,
What was the camo pattern you used on your 20? I am getting ready to dip 2 remmy 20s and am window shopping camo patterns. Could you tell me the pattern, base coat color and where you got the camo film? Thanks much! - Seadux :icon_thumright:
That's a wicked looking 20 ga. Good looking dog too.

Sorry it took me so long to get back.
OK, the pattern is Trek Camo found here:

Once I cleaned (plastic stocks with dawn dishwashing and water and metal with degreaser) I Primed with: SEM Etching Primer (http://www.autobodytoolmart.com/sem-self-etching-primer-aerosol-p-15345.aspx)
These coats are time sensitive so this is important.
1 hour after priming I painted with Krylon Camo Fusion Tan: (do not wait over 40 minutes to dip)
30 minutes after paint, I dipped. I tested on a couple of blank compact discs to practice.
nice i like that :icon_thumright:
What size kit did you use to do it? Would the 1 Meter kit be enough, or should you get the 2.5 meter kit?
Tim,
It looks like you did an excellent job with a notoriously sensitive process. Great work!
FullChoke
Wow. Those all look great....
nice. i love my knoxx stock.

I would get the $99 kit just to make sure you have enough. Its not the film you will run out of, its all the spray can stuff. There was just enough primer, paint, applicator and clear coat to do one gun. Plenty of film however.
sent from my wife's typewriter
Thanks for the reply, I am in the process of ordering supplies for my dip now. I have read several people discuss running out of activator etc. with the kits so I plan to order supplies and film separately. I have access to spray guns etc. and I am planning to dip 2 20 ga. turkey guns, a waterfowl gun and a muzzle loader, so having enough activator, primer and base coat will be critical. Surprisingly the camo film is the cheap part! I am going with MW spring mimicry on the turkey guns. :thanks:
Awesome job. Looks great.
That looks REALLY good! I have an 870 in the corner getting no use and no love. Thanks for giving me another project to research and spend money on. :help:
Looking good.

What length barrel is that? What kind of pattern numbers are you seeing?

Sorry for ressurecting an old thread but I was wondering how you dipped the knoxx stock? Did you have to take the recoil reducing pieces apart or did you dip it just as it is there? I have an ATI stock that I was thinking of dipping to match the 835 I picked up today.
Thanks,
Cajun1

The last picture with the gun disassembled is how I dipped it. You have to roll it into the ink to make it wrap the pattern around the stock without a seam.
May have missed it,but how do you like the ati stock? Seem like it fits good ? No crack or gaps ?

I did like the ATI stock, but just like the Knoxx a little better. The ATI was much lighter. The only problem was that the ATI, or at least the one I had, was at an odd angle when you shouldered the gun. I had a red dot on the gun as you can see which made it ok, but it was difficult to get down on the gun to look down the rib on the barrel with the ATI angle.
