I never realized there was so many different opinions on Turkey Hunting until I joined OG. Don't get me wrong different opinions make this a great place to be. Thought I might be because of when people started hunting ? So what year did you start Turkey Hunting?

I would say I was around 12 so about 30 years ago. I took a break in there for a while...but I cannot remember how long it was

i went along on my first hunt in 1986 when we had our first turkey hunt in this county, i couldnt hunt until i was 13 the year was 1990 :z-guntootsmiley:

I was killing turkeys during the fall squirrell season as far back as 1975. I began to hunt them in a more tradtional manner in the spring in 1988.

It wasn't continuous but I killed my first turkey in 1968. Off and on until the mid 70s due to lack of birds then pretty regular after that thanks to a fellow named Ben Rodgers Lee. He was a big influence in my younger days. I lived to read his articles and books.

I think the year was 1986 or 87. Didn't have a clue what I was doing. All I knew was that I got to be out in the woods with a gun in my hand.

I have it written down in my journal but do not have my journal with me, I think the first Turkey Hunt in the spring was somewhere around 1985 or 1986.
I know I got a fall permit in 1987 as we were watching the Twins in the world series on a small black and white TV in the campground

Started out with my Dad in the mid 70's
Was on my own by '78-'79
Didn't kill my first spring bird 'til 1983
Believe it or not, just hearing a bird back then was an accomplishment.

1979 was the first year I could carry a gun. I was twelve years old. Called one in while sitting on my dad's lap 3 years before that on a Sunday morning a couple weeks before the season came in.

i can remember telling my dad i was wanting to go turkey hunting when i was around 4 5 or 6 that was around 1970 or so. he would take me behind my grandmothers house just over the hill and told m to sit still ,, he would come back. he taught me to use a leaf somewhat. to call with. however itwas aloong time till i took my first one.

hunted a little by myself in 76,77, then they shut it down in North Louisiana where i live, then started back in 88 when a fellow started working with me that turkey hunted, been crazy ever since

2006. My brother got me hooked when the first time I went with him I had 30 turkeys flew down ontop of us. I had 2 jakes running at my decoys and I shot one 8 yards away with a single shot 12 gauge. I was hooked! :you_rock:

Yes sir I remember it like it was yeaterday. It was 1976 I was 12, dad had made a cardboard cut out of a turkey for a decoy. He painted it black, he keep telling me to watch for a icecream cone coming through the woods not a turkey. The bird gobbled good and then went quiet. I was looking around to see where dad had gone, he was behind me calling. When I looked back at his decoy there were now 2 of them. And one was my first gobbler, that was 35 years ago. I think of the gas I burned and the money I have invested in guns, shells, chokes, calls. Wow I must be nuts. I can remember in high school, taking a girl out to listen at night before a date.

The only thing I would change if i could is, hunt Texas more.....
