Here's a picture of the high score at the most recent World Championship Still Target Shoot. It was shot with a stock Mossberg 930 with a 28" barrel and the SSX Turkey Choke, using 3" Hevi-13 shotshells with 2 oz. of #6 shot. I shot that gun in both the Open and Hunter classes for 2 days.
I found that gun to be totally reliable and a patterning machine.

Thank you. We shoot with the muzzle of the gun 40 yards from the target with no rest except an elbow on a knee.
Thanks,
Clark
Look at that 3" Circle. That'll put a hurtin' on 'ol Mr. Tom.

Thank you. Our fall season starts in a few days, so I'll see if I can get one of those birds in front of this gun.
Thanks again,
Clark
Congrats!!!!! A very tight pattern indeed. :z-winnersmiley:

Thank you Shannon. I have some better, close-up, pictures of the 10" area and it's pretty dense all around. I'd be very confident taking that gun to the turkey woods.
Thanks,
Clark

Thank you very much. The season is just around the corner. Doris and I expect to be in the turkey woods on day 1 and hopefully call some birds to the gun. The "crop" looks good this year.
Thanks again,
Clark
Great shooting Clark. My friend Steve Conover also shot a 37 at the World Championship too with his with a custom Savage 210 bolt-action 12 gauge shotgun with an Indian Creek Black Diamond Strike choke tube. Y'all were all shooting great. The 20 gauge patterns were really good to. Hope you get to bust a few fall birds.
Thank you. We'll sure be out there giving it a try. The turkey population looks good. We had a perfect season in some respects, no rain, so no flooding of nests but a drought and very high temperatures. It does not seem however to have effected the turkey population.
Thanks,
Clark
That red circle is tore up. Way to go!

Thank you. I was very pleased with the performance of the Mossberg 930 throughout the event. It's the only 12 gauge gun I shot and I shot it in both the open and hunter classes.
Thanks again,
Clark
Clark, how many shots were fired without a FTF/FTE, without a full cleaning of the action?
I know you shot all day long the 1st day, with 3" loads. Did you clean it really good that night, before competing again the next day, or just let 'er rip 2 days in a row?

I "deep cleaned the bore", cleaned the gas piston and gas chamber and cleaned the fire control unit on that gun in about mid-January. I did not clean any of the action parts, gas piston or gas chamber until a week or so after the World Championship. I have not yet pulled or cleaned the fire control, nor have I pulled the bolt, firing pin, etc. to clean them or the inside of the receiver. I will do that soon however just to see what has accumulated there.
From January until the time I cleaned it in mid October, that gun had boxes and boxes of 3" turkey loads through it both at my range and at several still target shoots at which I used it and I also provided it as a "loaner" gun for anyone who did not have a still target gun with them. That included a shoot in Kentucky, the Illinois State Championship and the Southern Illinois Classic. Then I shot it for 2 full days at the World Championship.
When I cleaned it I found a good bit of carbon on the piston and in the gas chamber, as you'd expect but everything was still cycling just fine. In a way, I wish I'd not cleaned it just to see how long it would have gone before there was a malfunction.
The only maintenance that I performed on the gun was to dry brush the choke and run a Tico Tool down the bore occasionally. About mid-day at the World Championship, I cleaned the bore with some Hoppe's and a few patches.
I attribute the FTF/FTE of the 930 to 2 factors. The first is that I thoroughly cleaned every single part of that gun when I received it. I left no packing grease or oil in any part of it. I was very judicious in the use of any lubrication.
The second is the quality of the gun itself. It's very well made and thought-out in design. The bore, after I deep cleaned it, was slick and smooth as was the gas assembly and magazine tube. It's a pretty uncomplicated gun and to me, uncomplicated is good.
Thanks,
Clark

That is a very good looking gun and I'm sure you'll be very pleased with it. That 26" barrel should also serve you well.
I wish you all the best.

Clark
:OGturkeyhead: I like the pic you posted , should I get a SSX Turkey Choke , for this . Thanks

As to your statement about increasing the size of the target, please think through this. Can you imagine how much time it would take to count all the pellets in each swarm of shooters? They would have to start shooting in January each year to determine the winner by the end of the year.
Since 98% or more of the tightest patterns would be inside the 20" circle, do you then give each quadrant a count for consistency? I definitely agree with you that current shells are plenty adequate for hunting and that many assume that their gun is not any good if they don't get 300+ shot in a 10" circle and that is simply not true. I know that I am not really concerned with patterns beyond 40 yards and my goal is a really uniform pattern that will cover the area rather than trying to force pellets from a shotgun into door knob patterns.
