Title: Smartphone Choice
Post by: bullet355 on February 25, 2012, 11:49:48 AM
I think I ready to get a smart phone, so I wanted to some opinions on which
one I should go with. I know this has been brought up before and I searched before I made this posts but most of what I found is almost a year old and I wanted to get some new thoughts.

iPhone 4s. For hunting it's a really good phone because it has excellent gps capability, an 8 megapixel camera as well as the 1080p (high definition) video recording.

I've had my iPhone 4s since the beginning of the year and don't know how I've never got away without one before.

I don't have an iPhone 4s I just have the iPhone 4 but if the 4s is better than the 4 it must really be something! iPhone's are awesome!

This shows a great comparison chart (3rd Google result, there may be better ones) for iPhone 4 vs 4s.

Wow I'm supprised at how many like the Iphone compared to the Droids.
From looking at post from about a year age I kind of expected an even split
or a little in favor of the Droids. This is why I wanted fresh opinions.
Thanks everyone keep em comming

I cannot believe that all my Old Gobbler brethrent have been brainwashed by the Big Bite. Here is my take on the iPhone and Droid.

If you want a phone that is simple to use and is controlled through one or two apps then the iPhone is probably for you.

On the other hand if you are a tinkerer and like to have things your way and not be told by big brother how you like your stuff done then I would say get an android. Their are a multitude of Andriod phones it also kind of depends on who your carrier is to determine which one to get. I have sprint so I have the HTC EVO and I like it and was looking to cash in on my upgrade but I do not see anything as of yet that catches my eye so I am sticking with the EVO.

One more thing if you are lucky enough to live in a 4G enabled area good luck getting 4G service with that iPhone seeing as it is not capable of getting 4G signal. Just about all Android phones are 4G ready.

Sorry I have a huge Anti-Apple bias in case you could not tell.

I have an iPhone 4s. Picture and especially video quality are absolutely wonderful. User friendly. Simple. One drawback is that it doesn't come with navigation, and the free ones don't seem too good. I had a droid incredible that had google navigation with street view. That thing was spot on. Really miss that, but then again this is coming from a fella that gets turned around in his backyard. Overall I'd still pick the iPhone.

iPhone 4s

There is some individual freedom with Droid phones. The draw-back is there are not many app choices and they are not protected. Apple has a flawless record for viruses. Droid does not. The price of freedom.

sharxfan,

Sorry to disappoint you but the iPhone 4s is capable of utilizing 4G. Also my wife has the new android phone Motorola Razor and she has had several issues with her android service compared to my iPhone 4s which has had no issues to date and I have had my phone longer than her. I like the androids as I had one in the past but they dont even come close to being in the same league with the Apple iPhones specifically the 4s .

bird

Lol, im pretty sure (9.9999%) iPhone 4s DOES NOT have 4G capability. But, the 4G network is limited it a lot of areas and sucks battery life to boot.

As for navigation, the previous poster that said it lacks in it, I would agree. That is, it has good nav but not spoken turn-by-turn.

I just got a commando by Casio. This thing is DA BOMB! Best part: highly shock resistant (you can drop it from 20 ft like three times) and it's water submersible to three feet for 30 minutes. I've tested it, its a beast. After ruining a couple phones by dropping them in the drink (or by dropping myself in the drink with the phone in my pocket) and by having them on my body while stuck miles from the truck in a torrential downpour, I decided it was time to upgrade.

I really like the android system and can deal with the 3G coverage so long as the phone is basically waterproof. It was an easy decision for me...

If you think about it everything media related is run through the iTunes store. If you wnat an app the only place to get it is through the Apple store. Apple is very big on DRM rights management and it is hard to put any DRM free stuff on it.

Don't get me wrong I think the iPhone is great if that is your cup of tea but I have serious issues with the Apple business model and hate having someone tell me what I can and cannot do with my stuff therefore that is why I like Andriod. I can put a root kit on it if I want I can find apps and put them on if I want even though they have not been through the app store.

I have the incrediable now and   it seems that the some of the top rated free apps have problems and u have to uninstall and install again. I also like the navigation  on the droid . I guess they both have here pros and cons.

Have the razor the wife has the 4s. Both are good phones. IPhone has better camera and is simple to use. Its all in what you get used to. I do like the turn by turn Google maps on the
Droid. The new RAZR Max has a huge battery that will last probably double any other smartphone. The 4s is not 4g either. Can't go wrong with either platform.

What is the best monthly rate that one can get for a data/intermess plan for use of a smartphone?

What I have seen has been up near $100 a month.

I use standard phone with ATT, something like 500 minutes, and it is $40 or so plus all the baloney taxes.

Not sure about the best, but IMO Sprint is the way to go for pricing on a smart phone that requires premium data because they are one of the only carriers still with truly unlimited data without caps and overage charges.

Note: may be biased due to being with them for the past 2+ yrs, but the above fact is the reason why my wife and I switched.

If all you call is other cell phones then Sprint has a $79 unlimited but seeing as I call a lot of land  lines for work I went with the $100 plan and it is nice never having to worry about a limit.

My first smart phone was a droid. But I recently upgraded when the iPhone 4S was available and my plan allowed for a cheap upgrade.  The iPhone is a way better phone in my opinion.  The only drawback is battery life on those long days sitting in a tree stand bow hunting.  Running the video camera and texting my buddies eats up batteries.  I had the same problem with my android but I had two extra batteries all charged ready to put in the phone.  To solve the problem with the iPhone I bought a Mophie juice pack plus external battery which is also a protective case for the phone.  Awesome set up!! For anyone who hunts long periods of time without the ability to charge your phone I would definitely recommend the Mophie juice pack.  Hope this helps.

When I went to get my new phone, I was dead set on the Iphone 4s.  After playing around with a couple of others, I left the store with a Motorola Atrix II.  I've sat side by side with a buddy with an Iphone and my browser's way faster.  I'm happy with it so far.

Commando here.  Perfect for the outdoors as it is waterproof, shock resistant, and can stand extreme temps.  It has a built in compass which is also handy.

I have a Samsung Soltice it is not a Iphone but it works pretty good. I am with ATT I can not remember what our bill is. I have an older plan I do not think folks can get now. I have inlimited data with no caps or added charges like the Sprint guys have. I think Verzion and ATT stoped offering the unlimited data plans last year.

With AT&T I pay about $200 a month for 4 iPhones with 2GB of data and a large number of minutes I will never use (due to the select 10 list where you can pick 10 numbers you call for free). But I work for IBM and get a 23% discount.

Gz'one Commando by Casio.  It is a milspec phone (waterproof and shock/drop proof) especially if you are going to be bringing it into the woods.  I was at Buffalo Wild Wings the other day and my buddy put his into a full pitcher of beer, we drank the pitcher and we wiped it off and made a phone call.  He also washed it in the sink, and dried it under the hand drier.  It also has Gorilla Glass and he actually took his truck key, scratched the heck out of the glass and It didnt leave one mark.

My wife has the IPhone and I have an HTC Inspire 4G.

If you ask her what she likes better she will say she hates my android system. I will say I hate her IPhone setup.

The HTC allows me to have 40 GB of memory and since I am on the go most of the time, I jsut load any files I might need on my micro SD and pop it in my phone and off I go. The guys here at work have both the Iphone 4S and several varieties of Android - the common opinion is that it depends on what you want from your phone as to what you will like better.

Personally, I will NEVER own anything Apple. With all that bias aside, I really do like my android operated HTC Inspire 4G!

Well I finally got my smart phone, I went against the majority and got an Andorid and I'll tell you my reasons:

I'm with verizon because they have the best coverage in my area. They are offering a double your data plan (pay for 2GB and get 2GB free) if you get a 4G phone (Iphone is not 4G). I wanted the extra 2GB since this is my first smart phone and I'm not sure how much data I will use.
I was also able to get a Motorola Droid Boinic Free :happy0064: during their leap day sale on line. The Iphone I believe was 299.99.
I hope I haven't made a bad decision because it will be 18 months before
I can up grade again. Maybe I'll go with the IPhone then.
