Title: The exact tree?
Post by: gotcha on January 20, 2012, 06:09:57 PM
Can you go to every tree{or setup}that you have killed a turkey at?I am fairly certain I can, might take a few minutes when I get close though. My experience is once I revisit a kill site the details start coming back in my mind.

Since I have only killed six, yep.  Easily and with great detail.

Ain't no way for me.  Some of the tree's I've killed turkeys at are now a parking lot, housing developements or been dead 40 years.  Heck, I couldn't even go to the exact trees from last year.

As long as I can get to the next tree I'll be good! :)

Just put corn in the bed stink, and shoot'm out the back window. Never have to leave the front seat!

I could get you close on most, but there are some I'm not sure I could get close to again.  In big forested land when you run and gun, it's easy to plop down in the heat of battle and not even be able to return to the same tree after the shot.  I remember all turkey's well, just not the tree.  Maybe I just have a terrible memory. :newmascot:

I start smiling as soon as I get in the woods and get distracted before I ever get there!   :)

Not everyone, but when I do walk by one it all comes back to make for some wonderful memories.  :z-guntootsmiley:

No way I would be able.

Some aren't there due to thinning, cutting. I can get close to some, and back to others, but some are long gone in time, and memory.  :toothy12:

I can't recall exactly every spot, but just about every setup. Just the other day I showed my grandson a tree I setup under and killed a nice gobbler from. I can also recall locations of setups I missed birds from.

Probably all ,except the first one. I went back just a few days later and couldnt find it.I know the general area ,but thats it. I was too fixated on slipping in and setting up on a gobbling bird I kinda got lost. After shooting it I headed to an open field I could see to get my bearing and stumbled onto a 2 track about the time another hunter came by and gave me a lift back to my truck.

Not all of them but one big oak in particular I've killed 5 setting against. My lucky spot for the opener every year.  :icon_thumright:

I can get to all of them, I can also with a little reading tell you about every one weight, beard, time of day and shot used.
I keep a hunting log book with all the information from every hunt since about 1983 or so.

There have been way too many, but I could get you close to most....if not all of them.  Some were taken with no trees available, but then I could show you the hill I used to pop over!

Funny you should mention this..I have been going back through my journal and marking all my locations in Google Earth. I started my journal in back in 1974, and have recorded all my turkey hunts within. Most were pretty easy to find...some I haven't found yet.

I can get you very close to each tree if not the same tree.  I find myself all the time when walking in the woods remembering certain hunts when I get to certain areas.

I think I could get back to a couple of them.  I know I could get close to just about all of them.

With over 30 years of turkey hunting behind me, no, I can't recall every tree. In fact, in some cases, I doubt I can get closer than a quarter mile of where I actually bagged a bird early in my turkey hunting career. After I began carrying a GPS about 10 years ago, I log in every kill, which is kind of neat.

As for the memory part, I can remember each and every gobbler I've killed, and most that I didn't, and, with some, I can recall the very spot, but others, I just recall the area I was hunting in. Neill

How about a tree you go back to year after year?

Some, maybe all?   Walked directly to the tree I shot a jake at this fall.  That was becasue I went to pick up the pot call I left that day!

I used to have one of those.  It was nice to me for several years before the rainy springs and bobcats showed up, and the birds disappeared from the farm.   :'(

There is a big cypress tree that has had atleast 4{that I know of}gobblers taken, plus a miss from in less than 10 hours of sitting. Its a perfect tree in location, comfort and concealment.

The same area and some times the same tree or rock, I used a lot of big rocks as my backing through the years. But just the area's brings back the memories of the kills and misses.

I usually can't find the tree after I've went and picked up the turkey. Usually I'm trying to find my spent shell. I swear those things can hide under a log after you shoot them.
