Question:
What's your favorite range for harvesting turkey birds?
Option 1: 40-45 yards
votes: 1
Option 2: 30-35 yards
votes: 41
Option 3: 20-25 yards
votes: 17
Option 4: poking his head in the gun barrel
votes: 5
What is everyone's favorite range for killing a bird and why?
I know there are a ton of variables, but I 'm sure if you could pick one to hammer birds at all day long, you guys would have one.
I personally like 30 yards. I can see everything I need to see, I know my pattern is gonna have developed nicely, and there is less ability for him to spook because he's still out there a ways.
Just what I was thinking!! Couldn't sum it up any better.

I voted 30-35 yds. I will say tho that I used to hunt with a old fellow who would always tell me "I'll let him get close enough so I can poke him with the barrel that way I know I want miss"
I like to take them at 20 25 yds gun patterens pretty good that this range ,, but ifin the birds seem little spooked i ll take them little futher 30 ,35 yrd

Ditto
When I read the title of the post I thought, Amana,or Kenmore, maybe Fridgidaire. Dang I need to get out of the house.
20 yds - at least . Any closer and I hyper ventilate.

Red, you crack me up!
I always like to see how close I can get em before sending them to valhalla, That being said, When a bird is so close you can smell him...let's just say adrenaline does funny stuff to your vision, your hearing, your sphincter... :o
I like em around 30-35 to allow the pattern to open up a bit. Killed a pile of em really close, but there's always a chance of missing them with the slug like patterns from a turkey choke at close range.
I picked the 30 yard mark, would rather have them too close then too far.

X2
i like them around 20 to 25yds. when you have them close it really makes the ole heart pump. knowing that if i dont do my part and if he picks me out the hunt is over.that kind of excitement is what keeps me going back day after day.nothing like it
IMO there is no such thing as too close. I like to get a little splatter on me. :happy0064:
30 -35 yards is ideal for me but it all depends on the bird and the situation at hand.
I thought shooting range at first glance glad I read on.
85 yards! If I miss him I wan't a valid excuse. Since 85 is not an option I'll take 20-25. I can always so they were to close.
25-30 yards is my ideal range. Far enuff where my pattern has spread but close enuff where it doesn't spread all down in the body
I like them 20-25
30-35 - best pattern without too much damage to meat. Inside 40 and I pull the trigger. Inside 25 I tend to shoot their heads off, and there are too many pellets in the breast meat.
30-35 id great for my shotgun pattern.....much closer and I stand a good chance to miss em.
The closer the better. I like to feed my addiction and get my heart pumping. With that said, 90% of my birds have been taken in the vicinity of 20 yards.
:smiley-patriotic-flagwaver-an voted 30/35
I picked 30 to 35. But I would not pass up a good shot at 40 yards. I have shot them a 3 yards. Some would ask why did you let him get so close. I shot him as so as I had a clear shot. It was not a pretty picture for sure.
I voted 30 to 35 yards. Good patterns at that distance.
The Patterns are at their best at 30-35 Yards. Big and dense, like a hammer!!!
My pattern is most deadly at 25-30 yards. However my favorite range to shoot them at is inside 15 yards.
Get 'Em close and know what your gun will do at that range. You might wet yourself but to me it is the greatest thrill in all of hunting. I've had to let a few start to walk away because I let them get into "knife" range. Those I'll never forget.
I prefer 36.5 yards, but it wasn't an option, so I voted for 30-35. ;) Neill
There is nothing like having one right up close, and if I can do my part, I'd take one as close as they want to get. Last year I shot one at about 15 yards, and seeing him blown up in full strut walking down that old dirt road is one of the coolest experiences I've ever had hunting. I've shot some farther than that, and a couple closer than that. It's hard for me to pick an answer. Obviously shooting a slug sized pattern at his head isn't as easy as a 25-30 yard pattern, but the closer the better, as long as I can pull off the shot.
30 yards

I voted 20-25 yds. Nice tight pattern for head mashing and few pellets, if any to the breast..
30 to 35 yards for me although I have taken a few at 40 to 50
