Title: Health and fitness
Post by: 4nwtf on February 15, 2011, 11:34:11 PM
Who all works out on a regular basis?  Any good high protein diets you guys using?  I work out 5 days a week most weeks.  I have gotten back on a good high protein low carb diet.  Just thought we might learn something new that can help with our health/fitness.

I wish I did. I went on a Low Carb diet about 13 years ago and I went from 200 to 170. I kept it off for the three years I worked but since I have been retired nine years I have put 25 of it back on.

Too much sitting around and snacking in front of the TV. I try to walk/run three or four days a week and I rarely eat fast food but it seems the older we get, the easier the weight comes on.

I am a health food nut.  Not in the best of shape currently.  Injured my back and shoulder and got up to 230.  Im down to 195 though, not to shabby for being 6'3.

I haven't had soda since 2006.
I haven't had fast food since 2007.
I don't drink.
Im pretty big into organic foods as well.  I eat a lot of boiled chicken, salads, fruits, etc.  All I drink really is water, apple juice every now and then lol.  I try to buy all nitrate and preservative free foods as well.

Up here at college I run several nights a week and I am just slowly getting back into the weights since I have been feeling better.

I am REAL good at loosing weight... not so good at keeping it off.  Every year I drop 25 to 30 pounds and will be jogging 4-5 miles a day just before turkey season.  Then wind up putting it back on over the course of the year.  Not healthy I know.  I can be highly diciplined for a couple of months but not perpetually.

I have put my self on a diet since July 1st. Went from 255-260 down to 215.I'm mainly just calorie counting. 1500 -2000 max per day. No junk food to speak of. The occasional candy bar.Looking forward to doing some walking soon as the snow melts.Hope to be at 200 by mid April.

My eating habits are not the best, so I'd be interested in seeing a good high protein diet.   I have been following an exercise program recently.  I have the same problem as skeeterbait in that my usual routine is to work out hard, mostly running and cardio, for a couple months before elk season then nothing.  These darn mountains aren't getting any easier for elk or turkeys, so I'm trying to change that habit.

I teach cardio/kickboxing classes, and this is some advice I give to new students...

First of all, I would recommend to anyone first starting out to take all of your meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner), cut the portion sizes in half, and eat six times a day, instead....about every three hours.  Your body will be less apt to store what it doesn't immediately require as fat.

Step #2 would be to start doubling the amount of water you drink.  Basically, keep drinking water until you pee clear.  Having a glass of water before and after each meal will help you feel full, also.  WATER ONLY!  SODA DOES NOT COUNT!

Step #3 would be to start cutting down on "enriched" foods.  Try to use "whole grain" substitutes whenever you can.

Step #4 would be to start cutting down on anything containing high fructose corn syrup.

Step #5 would be to double your raw vegetable intake and dietary fiber.

Step #6 would be to give yourself one free meal per week.  Eat or drink whatever you want and however much of it you want.  :)

Overall, you don't have to deprive yourself of anything (unless you have a medical condition, of course).  Strive for a balance of proteins and good carbohydrates.  Your body needs some of everything...just in moderation.

And as for exercise, find a balance of cardio and strength training to best compliment your new diet.  It takes a long time to put on weight.  Don't rush and try to take it all back off at once...that only increases the chances of you burning out and ballooning back up again.  1-2 pounds per week is ideal.

Great information, I have a masters in Exercise Physiology, but have forgotten much of it.  I only have so much room up there.  #6 is something I try to get my patients to understand as well.  It is important to have little splurges occasionally to keep your mind right and to not burn out.  Also, this Biggest Looser society we have now, there are too many unrealistic goals and thus too many unnecessary failures.

Also, back on the treadmill and pushups this morning.  Day #1

I just started doing P90X two Mondays ago.....  I use to wrestle when I was in high school, so I had to cut weight back then.

When I went and did the college thing I started packing on weight.  Then I got a job and cut a bunch back off.  Then I got married, got a crew leader position at work and I shot back up..........  A few weeks ago I got sick of looking at my man boobs and my double chin.

Thought to myself I am going to do something about this and made the call, and ordered the P90X stuff.

It has been hard, but I am really wanting to live past 60 so I am going for it.

You don't want Kidney Stones.  I've had them three times now.  Last year required surgery, and they don't make an incision :o

Horner,
I'm on the beginning of my 3rd week.   I borrowed the discs from someone and they are missing the core strength disc, so I've been substituting something else.  I like it, so I may buy it to have my own copy.  So far I've been good about hitting play every night and doing the routine.  I'm trying to stay with it and not get in the habit of skipping.
Good Luck!

That is great, maybe we can keep at each other............I have not missed yet, I have committed to 90 days so I am going to do everything I can do to stick with it.

Best of luck to you also.......Maybe when we are done we can get together and climb a small mountain.  That is kind of like what it feels like I'm doing now.

Small mountain  ;D  Nothing but big mountains in my neck of the woods.  Two 14'ers staring back at me everyday of the week.  I've never been up either of them.  I always thought my first 14'er would be the one that you can drive within about 100' of the top.  ;D

I work out but only sparingly during football and basketball seasons due to limited time and late nights. It's a shame because what I gain is lost when football rolls around every year. When I stopped early last fall I was benching over 300 lbs. Not bad for a 43 year old, huh

I tried the low carb diet last year and it made me a mental train wreck, after I done some read'n I found out your brain opperates on carbs so if you cut way back on teh carbs your nueron transmitters/recepters dont have fuel to run on and it slows brain funtions, thought process, emotions, and ?? uh ?? OH YEAH! memory.
I quit the low carb bit and now eat liek a cave man, if it aint fresh meat, fruits and vegies I (try to) stay away from it (but I love my biscuts in the mornin), nothin thats processed, no colas (ok, one in the mornin) very little bread, try to take in only natural sugar(whats in fruits and the like, liek sme one said STAY AWAT FROM HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP...ITS BAD STUFF) nothin out of a box or wrapper.
When I go to the store what I buy for me is found on the outside edges, walk the sides and you'll find meats(the less legs it has the better it is for you), vegies, and fruits,  Ive learned to pick thru labels, even if it sez 100% fruit juice it aint, so water and home brewed green tea is what I drink mostly.
My last D.O.T. physical I was at 345, I just got off the scales and was 326, some improvements have been made and this is done with only just some changes in eat'n habits, I have tried do'n some aerobics with my wife (dont ya'll be spread'n that rumor around) but only a little but enuff I can tell its get'n easier, I bought the P90X and rite now I cant touch it, but will later on.

I know I aint done much but its  a start, anyone want to start a therad, a challenge or what ever to see what can be accomplished here since were on the subject, maybe post a weigh in and set a goal for what improvements, mile stones or weight loss we'd like to acheive ?

At this point I aint do'n nothin but changed my eat'n habits, and even eat somethings I dont need but have cut way back on the fast food, colas, fried anything, only taters I eat are sweet taters.  Most of the time I try to eat breakfast at home, eggs or steel cut oats with some honey, take my lunch( meat, lots a vegies, always a apple, banana, grape fruit or what ever you like and some organic yogurt for a sweet) to work so I dont stop for the cheeze burger (and I love a cheeze burger), dont founder at supper time.  I try to eat enuff to cover the palm of my hand about every 3 hours, this takes get'n used to but your stomach will shrink some, your metabolic rate dont fluctuate so much, and you get a even energy burn all day.

I've dabbled in some exersize to see how it goes, word of warning...if you have some serious size like me dont get carried away with the aerobics, its easy to hurt yourself (personal expereince) so I'm gonna go easy and just start walk'n and maybe some aerobics with wifey till more weight comes off, my motor skills stink so the moves :jackson: are akward for me, but get;n better at it tho.

Since I started this guess I should add a little more.  In October 2010 I weighed 311.  Currently I'm weighing in at 258.  I would like to get back to about 220.  I get 20-30 minutes of cardio and about an hour to an hour and a half on the weights 4-5 days a week.  Of course I am fairly strict on my diet and drink 120+ ounces of water a day and no soft drinks.

Seriously, I just started a couch to 5K program after taking a three year break from working out/running...during those three years I put on about 50 pounds...now I have to lose 'em....  It finally reached the point where my size and lack of cardio vascular conditioning is having a negative impact on things I love to do, and that is scary, not to mention the health concerns....My goal weight is 225 ( I have a thick frame, and a lot of muscle mass naturally) by the start of next turkey season (gonna go after a Gould's when I hit the goal) :anim_65:

I'm with you guys.  I'm 6'8" 260lbs. Played Division I baseball at The University of Maryland and was in the best shape of my life at that point at about 225lbs. After I graduated I cursed even the thought of working out. Being forced to do it for so long really made me hate it. Now 7 years later at 29 years old I feel, and look like crap. I actually started P90X just last night and I must say it is comparable intensity wise to some workouts I did while in college. I have alot going on the next week so, so my plan is to do each of the first week about every other day, to help work out alot of the soreness. Then on the 28th I'm going to start the program from day 1 and never look back. I'm also going all out on the diet as well. IMO, they both go hand in hand. GOOD LUCK to everyone!!!

I found that for me it was the only way I could stay on a diet, I dont do very good with portion control. And Praise God for Carb Smart Ice Cream Bars!!!! I've been able to lose 42lbs since last Sept.  I got a bad report on chlosterol and triglycerides from the Doc.  I stopped eating anything fried, switched to diet soda, no sweets, and no fast food.  I went from 212 to 170 and I am 5'9.  At one time I weighed 225 so I'm actually 55lbs less than I was 3 years ago.  I mostly eat baked chicken and fish(both baked on a rack so the fat drips out), along with steamed veggies.  I highly reccommend the once a week splurges.  I have done that the entire time and it helps tremendously with burnout.  Hopefully everything is back to normal when I go to the Doc March 2nd or he will want to put me on a pill and I really don't want that.

I am just starting my routine to get into shape to run and gun. Mine is pretty simple although it works for me.
Cut down on portion sizes for my meals, jog every other night 1-3 miles. If your burning more calories than you taking in you lose weight. Running gets me in shape to climb the hills.

Good luck to all.

The fried foods was kind of a hang up for me, I'm from Tenessee for cry'n out loud, everything we eat is fried,  think'n its a federal law but I aint sure.

It take some effort to clean up the eat'n, it did for me anyway, after a while its all I can do to choke down a piece of fish, not be'n a big fan of it anyway makes it even harder, I cram it in and the more I chew the bigger it gets.

Steamed vegies aint so bad but I have to find ways to add some flavor, its rather bland to say the least.

Checkin in to see how you guys doing p90x are making out? I started full bore on Monday and am feelilng pretty good so far. I did the week one workouts over a two week period and am surprised how much more I am able to do this week. Pretty darn sore today, but it feels good. Started my nutrition plan on Monday as well and I've been eating excellent. Sticking to a 50/30/20 (protein/carbs/fats) approach. While I love the workouts and how good I feel after completing them, I promise you if I ever run into Tony Horton on the street I'm getting at least one good upercut in........

I haven't been on the scales in a while, so I'm not sure how much weight I've lost but I do know that I have lost 9" in my waist and my strength is returning.  Any updates from anyone else?

I've been trying to walk myself back into shape for about a month. Got heart problems and know I've got more blockages now. Have been able to push through the chest pains, but not working now. I've had two open heart surgeries and have 6 stints and suppose to have about 7 more as need. The open heart does not work for me. The bypasses close right back up. Last time I had 5 and they closed up withing a month. That's why the stints. Anyway went and listened yesterday morning and was all I could do to get back out. Had to lean against a tree about every 10steps. Going to call the cardiologist  Monday and pray for the best. If things go right I'll be back in the woods in about 4days and going strong by April. 4th opener. I was trying to put it off till after turkey season, but I can't hunt if I can't walk these hills.

Down to 185 now.  Been hitting the gym hard and still am doing a good bit of cardio.  Having a good diet is #1 imo.  You can have do all the workouts under the sun, but if your still eating like crap your not helping yourself.

Also for the folks that say the low carb diet made you feel like crap, it will, but should only be for a while.

When your on a "low carb" diet, you need to be eating more fats.  Also every 7-10 days I will have a carb day to recycle the carbs so my body isn't getting used to running on low carb which could cause it to slow my metabolism down.

I consider a low carb intake of anything under 100 grams of carbs a day.  On the days I weight lift I try to get over 100 grams of carbs, days Im not weight lifting I eat under 100 grams, usually around 70grams.

I liked stinkpinkle's post.  It had a lot of good info in it - avoidance of high fructose corn syrup, whole grains when able, etc.  I'm not a big believer in the low carb diet.  I burn too many calories with my exercise program and need to replace glycogen regularly.  I do tend to eat natural sugars and complex carbs rather than more refined types (raw vegetables, certain fruits, etc).  I think it's also important to target daily caloric intake above basal energy expenditures (resting metabolic rate) to avoid the starvation adaptation (storage of calories as fat and use of protein for calories) which decreases lean body mass and increases % of body fat.  Basal energy expenditures can be calculated or measured.  Many of the calorie counters on the internet use the calculated number to give you your target.  I recommend www.livestrong.com for my patients since it's non-proprietary and can be purchased as an app for your phone.  There are some health clubs and other sources that offer a measured value which gives you a better determination of the actual target.

I think it's important you find an exercise program that is fun and keeps you coming back.  I'm a biker.  More so road than mountain these days.  This past year I trained for and road what's promoted as the longest UCF sanctioned one day road race in the US from Logan, UT to Jackson, WY (LOTOJA).  206 miles.  It's a long day of riding.  I haven't yet decided if I'm committing another summer to that kind of training.  I tend to do less resistance training during the summer and increase the high intensity riding.  During the winter I base train primarily and lift more.  I'm sort of in the transition right now trying to drop both some muscle mass and body fat.

i was finally able to bench 315 lbs yesterday.  That puts me back to where I was at about 3 years ago before i fattened up and became lazy again.  I have also lost another inch in my waist (10" so far).  I would like to lose another 30 or so lbs so I am on a 1870 calorie diet.
