Title: Unicoi Loot!!!
Post by: ChesterCopperpot on January 12, 2024, 11:04:55 AM
As someone sick and in bed and unable to go to Unicoi I'm going to start this post for all the ones who did get a chance to go and say SHOW US WHAT YOU GOT! Would love to see your finds and pick-ups as well as just any photos of meeting callmakers or other forum members etc. Hope y'all are having fun over there in Georgia!

Great idea. I have constantly been refreshing FB for any updates and zooming in on as many photos as I can find.

Hope you're on the mend!

Having difficulty loading pics. Didn't buy a lot, but picked up a Clay Townsend slate/slate in maple with a Dymondwood striker and a Buster Halford Ceramic in Bloodwood paired with a Jeff Harrison striker.

Both would result in my death if I were a gobbler.

You guys get well soon!

I had reservations early last year but medical issues changed my plans! The weather in Michigan is now nasty. Good that I could'nt go. Maybe next year! Show us the pics!

I'm glad Chester started this post. I'm not sick (physically speaking) but 1100 miles isn't right around the corner for me. I keep promising myself next year. Mike Lapp mentioned how nice Helen is, so I looked the town up. Showed my wife pics of that quaint town and she seemed interested..so there is hope!

Didn't get many calls but meet some great guys. Meet Steve (West Augusta), Tim (Tal) Neil (310 Gauge) and Phil (NCSwampFox). Hopefully I didn't forget anyone.

Was Unicoi slow Friday? Only one purchase posted and a couple others mentioned. Maybe the economy is causing a decrease in purchases.

I got there early Friday morning and got one of the last parking spots in the designated parking area. The doors were to open at 9, but they let us in early. I came for 2 particular calls, got them, spoke briefly with a few guys and was in my car headed out by 9.

There were a few cars parked along the entrance road to Unicoi, but not near as many as last year. I got there around 8:30 last year and had to park along the road probably 150-200 yds away from the lodge.

Unless there was a late arriving crowd, I suspect turnout was down from last year.

If you've never been you should go. I normally hang around for several hours, but had to be home for something else, so made the quick less than 2 hr drive home earlier than I would have liked.

The callmakers are great people, willing to talk and you meet some really nice turkey hunters in the crowd too.

I hope not for the makers. I know some of the craft shows I went to this year were way down in sales. Tons of people shopping but just not buying stuff.  I imagine the guys making the trip to Unicoi also have the funds to buy stuff. I really wanted to go this year but I don't even have to money to make the trip let alone buy stuff lol. Also it's on my wife's birthday weekend

Like I said, I didn't get to go, BUT Anthony Ellis was kind enough to save this scratcher I had my eye on. Mud cured and rainbow poplar. That kind of friendship, fellowship, and kindness is what this thing is all about. Can't wait to strike one with it. Hope everyone there is having a blast!

I got there at 8:30 on Friday and both lots were full.  I parked on the grass over a curb.  It looked busy to me. I walked in with someone that had never been there before and he had $2k to spend.  I talked with one of the vendors today and he had sold out and said it was very crowded.  For those of you that have never been it is The Masters of turkey call makers, The World Series, the Stanley Cub , the Super bowl and whatever soccer does , ALL IN ONE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lots of great calls and even got a few myself. The calls are great but the camaraderie is what makes it special. Got to meet a couple friends I have been in a group text for years. Got to meet guys I speak over the phone with. See old friends and meet new ones. Was blessed that Mr. Danny Ellis had some of his collection there and he allowed me to play the original Henry Davis and Charles Jordan calls. Also ran an Archibald Rutledge box call. Mr. Dave Cirincione had a beautiful Billy Buice Dial Tone that was a great call, plus many other great calls. Just a great time all the way around!

This was my first time attending Unicoi and it is as good as everyone says. Got there late Thursday afternoon and there were already a lot of folks there. I got to meet and speak with many of the best Callmakers in the world, many of whom I have text with or spoken to in the past but nothing beats being able to meet and talk to them in person. That (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240114/83f0e012180495b38cb025d612942f7e.jpg)
alone is worth the price of admission. I also was able to meet and speak with several guys I have spoken to,text with and bought calls etc. from here on OG. It was really great to be able to put a name with a face. With all the negative issues going on in our country and the world it was  fantastic to be around so many positive, like minded, really great people. As far as my loot is concerned, I didn't purchase much but what I got taped me out and I really like both of them a lot.

Your right on both and my photography skills don't do either call justice. The Anthony call is ABW and Desert Ironwood Burl with a copper lock up MP trimmed in Walrus tusk. I really like Ant's new lock up lip stop. The Seth call is Brazilian Rosewood with a Mammoth Ivory MP,

Sorry to hear that you were sick and couldn't make it this year and I hope you are on the mend and feeling much better.

Got a badass "dope smoker" trumpet from my man Ant Ellis, Osage pot from my homie Lonzo, another badass trumpet from Jeff Hollis, custom turkey track coffee mug made by Erin Dorsey, both of Michael Simpson's books and great memories to add to the bank.

Oh yeah, I got to send my buddy a "get well soon" picture with Ant too!  Now, where did I put that turkey sack wallet leather...

I got a Delrin .45, and a Delrin Classic from Mr. Ralph, a Chechen Trumpet from Todd Black, an African blackwood XT from AGE, and an Ebony/Osage laminate green slate pot from Lon Trice. And as usual, made a raid on Mrs. Glenda's table for some needed stuff.

Hanging out for a bit with Mr. Dan Harris from Texas was once again a real treat. A big thanks to Beard and Hooks and Bwhana and his buddy Dan and all the rest for a great time. I found everyone from off of here that I had hoped to meet up with except for Mr. Neil (310 Gauge). If you see this Mr. Neil, I am sorry that we did not catch up with each other at the show. I hope we get a chance to do so at a later date.

Really grateful to get the calls from Mr. Ralph Permar and Anthony Ellis. And just a heads up - if you have not tried a Trumpet from Todd Black - they will almost play themselves and they are a real unique design. I can get you in touch with him if you want to try one if you will private message me.

Great show and folks, as always.  Spent way more money than planned, as always.  Had the opportunity to grab a few calls I'd been wanting for a while and catch up with some fine fellas.  I didn't take a pic of my haul.  We didn't stick around long but had a great time.

Now on to Nashville and the countdown is really on to Spring!

I ran that Macassar Ebony KP or one just like it, and it almost came home with me but I wanted and went with a Pink Ivory to match a Prudhomme and Buice I have.  You got a good one for sure!

Bought trumpets from Kenny Pedelahore and Mike Battey. The Battey trumpet was an impulse buy. It is a very good call but not sure if I am going to keep it or not. Family came with me this year and we reserved the same cabin for next year.

Here are the calls I was fortunate to get.  More importantly, the opportunity to meet all the call makers and learn is worth the trip alone. They are all fine people.  I am extra grateful for the extra time spent with Anthony Ellis, Dan Harris, Steve Mann, Marvin Breedlove, and Tim Bullock this year.

Also a shoutout to a great guy
mountainhunter1.  So glad we finally got to meet in person and hang out at the show. Enjoyed meeting Beards and Hooks too. These GA and PA boys are hell on turkeys and know their calls!

My calls are an XT in bocote and a scratch box in kingwood from Anthony, one of the first trumpets ever offered by Mr. Dan in ironwood (one of the most underrated / lesser known call makers on here), and an African teak and walnut Old Hen box from Mr. Mann.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240116/3ae9092029e4a3fe539514821c876d4c.jpg)

We are just thankful that you let us hang out with Dan and yourself. You guys made our day. And you did as well on what you got as anyone. That Becote is a jewel - and I totally agree that Mr. DHarris is the man. Maybe my favorite each year to talk with at Unicoi. That DI trumpet you got from him was all turkey.

Made the trip down to Unicoi for my second consecutive year, and it was a blast, hung out with my buddy Matt (Mountainhunter1) and got to meet bwhana and his buddy Dan, nice meeting you fellas!
I am going to try an run down the guys I met and spent a little time with, Lee Smith and James Witmer are local friends here in Pennsylvania. James had some awesome pot calls on the table and Lees boxes are top notch! I have a box in the works and about to be from each, so I'm excited because they make outstanding calls!
Talked to Steve Mann and got a sweet montouchie/mineral poplar from him, good guy and makes great boxes and he is always fun to chat with. Stopped by Jeff Mckameys table and got an awesome bloodwood/mineral poplar long box from him and chatted a bit. A nice treat was talking to Steve Torman (West Augusta) on here, I have two of his strikers that I really like. Hit Lamars table and picked up three boxes one for my buddy on here and two for me, 2 walnut/butternuts and a walnut/mahogany. Lamar
is a nice down to earth guy that makes amazing boxcalls and it's always a pleasure talking to him.
Met TJ Johnson and picked up two smokers one for me one and one for a buddy Sycamore/servic seeeberry and a cedar/serviceberry. TJ is a super nice guy and makes awesome boxes and it was nice to meet him for the first time. Talked to Mr. Irving Whitt for a bit to thank him for some boxes that I got from him recently and met his wife who makes call box sacks, two very nice people. Talked. to Tony Quarino for awhile and ran some of his boxes which ran real nice, he is always fun to chat with. Met Mr Moye Howard and got a chance to. thank him for a sweet Trumpet I got in the Veterans give away on here, beautiful call that sounds great, I just have to learn to play it alot better. Got to meet Jeff Lacey who makes some nice boxes and is a nice guy.  Met Larry Stephens and his wife, super nice people to talk too and I got a walnut/cedar half box and a cedar/spalted magnolia long box that are awesome. Larry showed me how to play his long box as well which I greatly appreciated.
Got to meet Mr. Bob Harwell which I have two fabulous boxes from and shake his hand and talked to Wendell Lancaster, two very nice Southern Gentleman. Got too meet Shawn Irish and Tim Bullock, two very nice callmakers and ran a few of Tims boxes which were fabulous. Said hello to a neighbor, more or less down there Jason Rohrer. I got to stop by Ralph Snodgrass table and picked up a sweet mini box which is  tamarind over Alaskan yellow cedar and alaskan yellow cedar/Osage longbox  that sounds amazing. Ralph is a real nice guy that makes killers and tried to teach me a bit and invited me too his shop which is within an hour or so from me. I stopped by Dan Harris's and got a cedar purrfect hen for my buddy, it is an excellent soft talker and he is a fun gentleman to chat with.
Stopped by and seen Marlin and picked up a mora/mahogany long box that is amazing. Marlin is a super nice guy as well. I also talked to Paul Durham and played his pots and box calls which were killers, I might be contacting him shortly for a box if he has time. Talked to Thomas Jameson and Steve Brown. Sorry for the long post guys, just super excited about my trip and all the people I met. that I didn't forget anyone. As far as my loot is concerned, I didn't purchase much but what I got taped me out and I really like both of them a lot.

Looks like one from Ant and one from Seth, and I bet they're both players. Love the extra details like the inserts on that X trumpet especially.

Anthony has really stepped up his trumpet game.  Love the mouthpiece and lip stop design.
He's really thinking.

The male shoe store.  I am going to have to go to this show once before I go to the big roost in the sky.

My brothers been.  Says it worth it.  After seeing some of the inventory I'd agree.  Congrats to all the makers and buyers.

Looks it was successful for many.
