Forget the politics, anybody got a story about his turkey hunting?

Yeah, I understand believe me I remember. But I was unaware he was a turkey hunter until recently when I saw the picture.

I was only a child when he was a president but know he got a bunch of people killed trying to get reelected. I can't get by that.

I live by Realtree farms.    I went past their gate one morning and there were three blacked out SUV's sitting at the entrance   I thought that was odd.   Found out later that day Jimmy Carter was there turkey hunting.

Can you imagine that clown parade sitting up under a roosted gobbler?  15 guys LOL.  Radio chatter between agents. The gobbler has left the tree. I repeat. The gobbler has left the tree!

Pretty cool to know that he was a former president who could have been doing anything and anywhere he wanted, and he chose to be turkey hunting. That's pretty cool to me.

You know i have to comment one more time about posts like this one , this will receive more view's / reply's and reads than someone trying to share good questions / experiences and information about how to hunt these gobblers and really it's a shame we let this happen with all the great knowledge this forum has to offer... It really bad when a guy ask a legitimate question about turkey hunting on this forum and only a few of us will reply with our on experience and that post will have over 100 reads or view's / looks with only very few reply's ... Everyone should take a minute and think about it ... controversial forum with these type post or do with want a forum that shares all kinds of turkey hunting knowledge and people asking questions and sharing about calls and how to make themselves better at turkey hunting. This may hurt a few people's feelings , but again is it not the truth ... ask yourself ... IMO.... Think about it , this is the time of the year we have the biggest influx of new people to the forum that could have second thoughts about joining this great forum.   But again we keep adding fuel to the fire ... with these controversial posts.. Posting his picture made it controversial from the start... IMO

I, with my children, sister, brother-in-law and niece drove to Andersonville and Plains to sightsee.  We learned that the President and his brother, of Billy Beer fame, were to play a softball game and the public were invited to watch.  I rather enjoyed the play and captured many good photos.  Out of 47 Presidents, someone has to be the worst.  I doubt that Jimmy was the worst, but he certainly was in the running.  I do believe he was a good man, and I am proud for him for getting his gobbler.

The only thing I would say is that this post really isn't that controversial. EVERYONE agrees he wasn't a good president. But he is a turkey hunter and even in his late 90's STILL has the desire to hunt these birds. I just found that interesting and relevant.

He was Our President. President of the greatest Country in the world. I was only a child when he was elected.
And from other things that I have seen, he definitely loved the sport of TURKEY HUNTING.  Couldn't be all bad.

Have a good one and May God bless y'all, Bo

Not sure how this thread was meant to be controversial, it says right off the bat to forget politics

as far as the pic being controversial, there is no decoys, blinds, reaping fans or empty boxes of TSS in sight. Just an old happy hunter

I don't think much of him as a President but hope I still have the drive to hunt at his age

True right here. This guy was a Baptist Sunday school teacher even AFTER the Presidency. Turkey hunter and fisherman as seen in the pics posted. Good man just not good at his job.

Went and listened to him teach Sunday School years after he was no longer President.  I also have worked with Habitat for Humanity helping build houses through my church.  One of his former Secret Service agents was a client of mine.

I agree with almost zero of his politics, but respect he tried to make his decisions from a proper place and tried to be a good man, unlike another recent president who I agreed with almost all of his policies but would not spit on him if his guts were on fire.

I want to hear any turkey hunting stories about him though and will stick with this thread to see if anyone has any.

I did recently hunt with a former US Representative from the "other party" from me.  We did not talk politics with him or his wife.  But we did talk hunting, cattle and Old Florida.  Turned out we knew a ton of the same people.  Enjoyed it so much we invited him to hunt with us (my nephew had won a duck hunt at his place in an Auction to benefit youth hunting in Florida).

I was an elementary school aged kid when he was president but learned some colorful language at a young age when my grandfather would vent his feelings about him. That being said I hope we see another day where a president, Democrat or Republican, poses in such a way enjoying the sport of hunting. Can't imagine how the media would react if a present day president did that now!

This is a good point. You'll almost certainly never see a President hunting again. I remember reading a bio on T. Roosevelt and the only thing the biographer held against TR was his love of hunting. I thought that's was crazy because it was his hunting legacy that I most admired about him.

I enlisted in the U.S. Army when Jimmy Carter was President.  IMO he was not a good president.  I did not like him after leaving office making it his business to tell future Presidents how to run the country when he made a mess of it while he was in office. Putting this aside I think he is a good, honest person who loves God and his country.  Hey, he grew up in rural Georgia.  I think putting politics aside he would be good guy to hang out with.  I know he fly fishes and turkey hunts.  That's great.  From what I understand his wife was a better fly fishermen than he was.  They came to Pennsylvania for many years to fly fish Spruce Creek together  I pray for him and his family as he takes that journey from which there is no return.  God bless you Jimmy.

Post 2008 Americans can't mention a president or political figure without turning into an emotional train wreck. Both sides are so sensitive about it, it hurts. While it was a cool attempt to try and honor a dying president and his love of turkey hunting on what I thought was a turkey hunting forum, we just haven't quite gotten to the emotional maturity level to do so. (Hence why Shannon's already had to delete posts on here from those who couldn't contain themselves)

Well said kytrk , a President in full camo smiling in a pic with a turkey he harvested on a turkey hunting forum is 100 percent appropriate and should be celebrated . Hunting and guns under attack from all directions and our own criticize this thread . I welcome new hunters coming to this site and seeing the pic and hear how a president enjoyed and supported hunting and fishing . I have enjoyed hearing the stories of the president on this thread as much as hearing other hunters stories.

Mr Carter truly loved the outdoors and sharing time in it with friends. Instead of profiting off his presidency by writing books and charging hundreds of thousands of dollars in speaking fees and using his connections to profit on the market he devoted himself to building homes with habitat for humanity and teaching Sunday school. I know several people that have attended his class and all walked away better for it. That says a lot about him as a man. I hope his final days are comfortable and maybe one day we'll get to share a turkey hunt with him in the great beyond.

He was a duck hunter too.  One time when I was much younger, I was going duck hunting with some buddies near Waldenburg, AR.  We were making the turn to go into our lease and were stopped by the secret service.  Apparently, President Carter was hunting much farther down the same road.  They wouldn't let us go down the road to our pit until he was safely tucked into his pit with his hunting buddies. Never agreed with his politics but I appreciate a fellow sportsman.

"Life is just too short to go quail hunting with the wrong people."

-President Jimmy Carter

Carter came to my state and rafted thru The River of No Return wilderness. It's not a trip for the faint hearted.

Since so many of you are criticizing him, try googling "ranking America's worst presidents"  and see where he's ranked and compare him to some of the ones you like.

Having been able to meet him and Rosslyn.. Was an eye opener...
Aside from his politics(which I don't see the same as him..), he is a genuine Godly kind hearted man... make no doubts about that... Also he loved to hunt turkeys.... He is very humble, but assuredly I bet he's probably a very good turkey hunter!!!

Rosslyn sat across from me on a flight and  saw me reading a bow hunting magazine and said something about how Jimmy loves to hint turkeys... He swung his head around and we talked about turkeys at length...

I disagree with him on many things...
But as a man- I have the utmost respect for him...
As a believer-I strive to be more like him!
I wish that some of those qualities were more prevalent among our politicians in Washington these days
