Title: “Best” homemade coon bait
Post by: JohnSouth22 on February 07, 2022, 01:01:57 PM
With deer season wrapping up here in south AL it is about time to put out the coon traps. Was interested to hear what everyone has luck with baiting DP coon traps. I personally have had great luck with cat food mini marshmallow mix but was curious to hear what other people run.

I've always used dry dog food topped with honey in a dog proof trap.

Dry cat food or marshmallows.  I then keep bacon grease all summer in a squeeze bottle and add a little of the grease in.

Best I've ever made is bacon grease, put it in a glass jar, melt the grease and mix in gold fish flakes, and add some salmon oil also.

Fish flavored dry cat food, mini marshmallows and cherry kool aid. I also use a spray bottle full of water and imitation vanilla to spray around the trap and or trail where the DP is set.

I have had really good luck with dry cat food. Ditched the sardines long ago. Little to no difference in results

In DP's use dry cat food and marshmallows. Depending on the trap you use the fishier the bait the more likely you are to catch opossum and skunks.

Like several have stated, marshmallows and vanilla. Also, I started using the floating fish food..  it lasts a little longer in the elements as it is a little more resistant to water. It's a good bait.

Jack Mackerel has always been my coon bait of choice. Cheap and full of liquid, you can mix with whatever you prefer, cat food, dog food or grain.

Kaatz brothers black label with some Smokin Aces squirted around the trap. I have caught plenty on dried catfood with milk replacer coated on it also.

Cat food and grape jelly.

If you want a good time, set up near den trees and call them. They will come storming out.

Catfish food with marshmallows and cherry juice. Lots of people use dog or cat food but it gets soggy and dissolves with the rain. Catfish food is made to get wet and will last a lot longer in your DP than the others. Once bag last all season long.

That's a good idea

I am a fan of shelled corn and fish oil.  No mess and catches them just fine.

Don't forget about opossums.... they raid nest too and aren't hardly caught in DPs.   If you're going to take the time to trap may as well set out some #1 foot holds.

Only thing I have caught in my DP traps this year is possums. I think I have the coons thinned out.

Back in the day when I ran a trap line, Jack Mackerel was my go-to raccoon bait. Put 100s of them down with it.
