Title: Looking for 1st Trumpet.....Who?
Post by: RED NECK on January 16, 2022, 03:49:09 PM
I have been interested in starting on a trumpet for a few years and I have decided that now is the time to find a custom one,I am not looking for a show piece, I want something that I can use and hunt with. I have lots of years experience using mouthcalls and I have never even tried a trumpet but I want to learn.

I can't seem to locate any Canadian custom trumpet builders so my search will begin here. I do have a budget in mind that I want to spend on one but I also want something that is going to last. The few places I seen online had some decent prices but then excuses on why they won't ship to Canada. I am not cheap,I'll pay my way and shipping costs.

If some of you custom trumpet builders have a call you are interested in selling,Please feel free to send me a private message. Thanks

If you have been wanting to try a trumpet for a few years you probably have a few guys in mind already. Let us know who you might be thinking about? Lots of good trumpets being made at reasonable prices. I will add Ernie Fetters and Daryl Slaton to the list. There are plenty of others also. There was a Clay Townsend that sold not too long ago that would have been a good one to pick up. Have fun deciding and you probably won't stop at one. I recommend getting One and only playing that particular call for a full year before you start adding calls to your arsenal. I learned this the hard way!!!!

I actually have no idea about, who builds these calls, other than a few names I have read today. I try and say this without being direspectful because that's not my intent, but I am sure that whoever I buy from it will be a solid call. I am sure that there are tons of excellent call builders.

I use three guys that I have bought custom pot and box calls from over the years, two in Canada and Spring Creek Calls from Michigan?

I am looking to buy one call, and I already know that I want to buy more. I also know that I am going to practice and hunt with this one for a year. I have a  custom wingbone on the way as well. Thanks for the names so far, and the emails. Lots of beautiful calls to decide on.

There are some killers on eBay right now including a Slaton, a Lewis Stowe, a Billy Buice, and a Kenny Pedelahore. Could message sellers and see if shipping is an issue. None of those listings say specifically that they don't. The KP and the Buice are calls that don't come up often secondhand and are well worth the current prices.

You wouldn't be disappointed with a Brian Mero trumpet.

Charlie Trotter makes a great sounding Trumpet that draws air really nice and the craftsmanship is top of the line.

I want to say Thank you for all the info,I have been speaking with Brian and will be picking one of his calls this week, I also have a lead on a call maker that is close by, and I never heard of,I am not a Facebook person,I assume that is why and I have sent him a message.

It should be a fun journey the next few months.

Thanks, I am actually watching some right now. I have pinhotti on when hes talking with Prudhomme and I watched a few other quick videos last night with a Lester fellow. We are getting slammed with a massive snowstorm, 45-50 centimeters of snow hitting and theres about 15 cm already so I won't be going anywhere today. It is a great day to watch, shop and cook.

Would anybody happen to know if people make a sheath, or a case/holder for multiple calls when not in use? I think I would like something to hold these in, if there is something out specifically made for trumpet/wingbone etc. Thanks for all the info so far. I already have three gentleman I am going to buy a call from, here in the next few days.

I want to start off my collection with a bang, i'll start running one and when I feel competant and confident then I'll start running others.

There sure are some beatuiful calls being built, I am impressed with them.

If I'm toting more than one yelper for the day, the other goes in this in my vest pocket.

As far 'knowing how many you buy,' suggest heeding Chris' advice above. However many you buy, learn on one, only one.

When you learn to control the air flow on demand, then move on to other styles of yelpers. Learning on just one will shorten your learning curve. I made the same mistake Chris did, until my mentor set me straight.

I plan on learning on one call only, keep another in the collection, But I am buying three to start, I plan on using one for a gift and I want two to start with in my collection.

I have been speaking with a few different call makers, I am trying to decide on which calls I want. I am waiting to hear back from two gentleman right now, as I also am ordering a few pot calls and a boxcall as gifts.

I have been collecting a few custom pot calls over the years and the odd box call, but mostly turkey guns have been my "itch" but I have really gotten to the place where I am almost done with that, except for certain ones now, so I need another "hobby" related to the Wild turkey in between hunting seasons, I wanted to get into trumpets last winter but I got busy with work and life, and dealing with health issues within my family.

I figure I'll just start and see how I enjoy it. It seems like It's a great hobby with tons of different types and builds from all over North America. I like that idea. So many friendly call makers I have spoke with so far building a solid call.

I decided to limit myself to one trumpet to start with,It makes more sense from every aspect, for a newbie trumpet user. I want to Thank the guys I spoke with and for all the info in this thread. We ended up with 48 cm of snow today and 10-15 on the way Wednesday. My snowblower was 1st star today, 3 times. I also had fresh Banana bread made for us, from my neighbour for cleaning their driveway and walkway out.

Your original plan of buying several up front is not a bad one, they all draw air a little different.

Sticking with only 1 call for the first year is good advise, but you could try each of the different trumpets or yelpers you have for a couple of days. then pick the one that seems the easiest for you to play and  only use that one for the first year.

Starting off with the one that matches your style of drawing air will make it easier and may get you on your way faster.

How would I know which calls, are easier to learn on? or is that on an individual  person to decide and figure out for themselves? I assume It comes down to the person. I'd like at least two to start with but don't want to make the learning curve more difficult than I have too.

There are rules of thumb like a Billy Buice 6" with a number 4 and Ralph Permar, but trumpets overall are as individual as mouth calls. Ones I like you may prefer another. Good luck on your quest.

If you go back several pages in the trumpet section and look for threads like yours you will see a pattern of whats been recommended for starting out, they are whats worked for the majority of people.
You wouldn't go wrong with a trumpet from any of them. Some of them would have a long wait period.

The Buice trumpets have interchangeable mouthpieces that have different diameter holes thru them, which changes the pitch of the call and how it draws air, the 2 most popular are the #3 and #4 as Davis mentioned

Any trumpet from Ralph Permar would be a god choice, his entry level Jordan call will do any thing you will need to do in the turkey woods

-Big Foot Zebrawood Maple Cocobolo Walnut

-Cherry Walnut Maple Paduk Ash

-Ash Walnut

-Cherry

These are 4 calls I am in the middle of buying, these have the bigger mouthpieces, there was 7 in total I was interested in from this certain builder but the other 3 had a tiny mouthpiece, so I'll start with these.

I'll probably end up with another half dozen from other builders in the next few months, I have had excellent advice from a handful of builders and I appreciate the info and help, I will be buying from you in the future.

So you bought 4 of the same style trumpets, with the same style mouthpiece, from the same maker? Hate to tell ya, but your probably gonna end up with 4 trumpets that sound the same... they should anyways if hes a good builder.... I tell ya what though, if your as persistant about practicing on that trumpet as you are about posting here about what gun or vest your gonna buy next, you'll sound like Zac Farmer in no time! Good luck and practice, practice, practice! To echo what others have already advised, start with one good trumpet, get good to where you are confident with it in the woods, and go from there. Sounds like that ship has set sail though.

As for the 4 calls being the same,I bought 4 because I found out the gentleman is actually a neighbour to my personal property I have owned for 22 years,in fact just down the road about 2 minutes and we have always wondered who owned the land off the long driveway,It is only neighbour we have never met.

His brother owns it and lives in a town close by, and the call builder lives an hour away and hunts there.
Small world and I liked the look of the 4 calls I bought, they are all different wood and do not look the same. I am more than happy with the calls I decided to buy, If they sound no good, they will be a great ornament hanging off the wall and I'll be buying more in the near future.

I plan on giving 1-2 away as a gift, and practicing with one of them.I have until April 25th to get decent with one and if I don't, oh well, i'll just use mouthcalls like I usually have lately.

I love winter time as my work brings me inside and I can work from basement and enjoy my love of everything Wild turkey, after a long gruelling bow season. Isn't it a great time to be alive and enjoying the wild turkey and all the benefits that come with that great tradition.

The greatest thing in life is having your health and your loves ones having theirs, my life has changed so much in the last 10 months that I will never let anything deter me in enjoying my obsession, passion and love for the outdoors, until I take my last breath.

The whole key to a good trumpet or any suction yelper is what is referred to as the internals, which is the differing sizes of holes, or the tapering of the hole going thru it.
The outside is nice to look at but the inside design is where it's at , along with several other things.

IMO the internals are the majority of what is going to affect how it drawls air, it's tone and ease of play.
Especially when learning, you don't want to handicap yourself and make it harder with a bad internal design.

The names mentioned on your thread are call makers who have a proven track record of a design that draws air easy and have great playability for a large number of people. A well designed yelper will shorten the learning curve.

Big Foot Zebrawood Maple Cocobolo Walnut

Ash Walnut

Cherry

Cherry Walnut Maple Paduk Ash

I do understand the look of the calls is secondary and I have spoken with a few awesome call builders and I will be ordering from them too, this man is not a younger man and has been awesome as well, so he earned my business this time.

Like the way the cherry and that mixed laminate on the far right look. It looks to me like his mouthpieces are all about the same length, as do the throats (kind of looks like the throats could differ some in length and if so that'll definitely change sound between them). But he's obviously played with lengths a good bit on the barrels which should definitely give you some different sounds. As a general rule, shorter calls tend to play faster, snappier. Would be interested to hear if the mouthpiece holes all look the same diameter, or if any are slightly larger, and would love to see a shot straight on at all four to try and see if he's altered the bells on them (I'd kind of assume given the lengths and shapes, he might have). You'll have to let us know how they sound. Out of curiosity, did he play them for you over the phone? Haven't seen that maker before but they look cool. Congrats!

The call to the farthest right in the first picture was the one I wanted the most when I looked at all his stuff. I am not sure exactly what you are meaning about the calls, as I admit, I am still a newbie when It comes to trumpets and I never have stated anything different, but here are pictures. And as soon as I start practicing later,I'll let you know If I can make any decent sounds, I plan on watching some of the videos and learning at the same time.

He's doing a lot of different things internally between them calls. Posted like that it sure seems like the mouthpieces are different lengths too. What do the holes drilled in the mouthpieces look like? All the same size? And judging by those bells I'd say that ash/walnut might be the easier call for you to learn on. In my experience more open bell designs are a harder call to start on due to building and maintaining back pressure. I'd start with the ash/walnut or the cherry.

They look the same size too me and when I was looking at calls, I seen some that looked "thinner" mouthpiece where you put your lips. I sent him an email Thanking him, and asking which one he would learn on, he sent me a written letter in with the calls to email, or call him anytime for advice and if I wanted help learning on a trumpet.

The man went out of his way for me and sent a scratch call , as a gift. I already ran it and I love the sound of it, I have 2 others I have bought in the past but I havent used them in years. This man is a class act, from my experiences so far.

I will be buying a box call and a pot call from him as well here shortly as gifts for my fathers 66th birthday in February.

-Cherry Walnut Maple Paduk Ash

is the one I have been messing with here for a bit and I have made my first sounds, I'll mess with the one that you suggested later and I'll decide on which one I find easier to make a decent sound and stick with it, and hide the rest. I made some decent sounding turkey sounds so far, but I also made some real bad ones too.It has been a blast so far,I am always up for learning something new.

Thanks, as soon as I put the Ash Walnut in and tried it, It was easier and I am making pretty good sounds on it,I also tried the others and the other one I found to make sounds easy(ier) is the cherry trumpet.

I will stick to the Ash walnut and practice. I have had the "that sounds like chit, to what is that?, and then, that sounds pretty good" all within the last 15 minutes. They have no idea what the next few months are about to become for them. :turkey2:

Watch this video of Marlin Watkins and listen to every word he says. Then watch the second video. Then watch the third. Then watch them again and again and again trying to do everything he's telling you to do. Glad you're having fun with it.

I have already had two doors closed harshly the last few minutes while getting in a little more time with the trumpet....geesh. I enjoy learning, I always love a new challenge. If the doors keep being shut I may just be up for 5am this weekend, and instead of getting ready for fishing or hunting. I may just take another lesson.

Daryal Gosey(ncbowjunkie) has some listed in the classifieds. His Are easy to play and sound very good especially for what he charges.

Just keep practicing and running calls. It may take years, but I swear, it takes a longbox in the kitchen for my wife to even look up.....and even then, I have to really be getting carried away.  :icon_thumright:

One of my best friends owns a gun shop and shoots all the time. He used to bait and kill a pile of coyotes, like close to a hundred one year. I knew he did it right by the house so I asked him where he set up. He said, "I just shoot them out the kitchen window." His wife was standing there and I said, "That don't bother you? Ain't you sleeping?" She said, "Yeah, hon, I just sleep right through it. After all these years don't nothing wake me up anymore."

I had a fiddle in my late 20's but I may love music, I was never great at making it with an instrument. The fiddle is my favorite instrument to listen too.

I hear ya, I am a crappy musician, but love playing anyway. I used to build and play(poorly)acoustic guitars, but always wanted to build/play violins/fiddles, so I am on that journey now. They are my favorite instrument to listen to as well, although the Cello sound is amazing to me too and I want to build one also....oh boy....lol

That is a great hobby,

I like the fiddle, bag pipes and steel guitar.

I played the bass guitar in my teenage years a bit, I thought we maybe were going to be a death metal band but quickly realized we were just 5 buddies,4 who couldn't play at all there holding one buddy down who was a great guitar player. It sure was fun to mess around though.

Here is what I have been working on the last few days, I can't wait.

If that cane yelper is the one I believe that it is, it's a real winner. Helped shorten my learning curve a lot. Really a great community on here. Good luck learning. I'm working on it my self and those trumpets sure are addicting!

After a few days of deciding on which I found easier, I actually find "Cherry" to be the one that I can make sound better and more realistic, I am planning on gifting the other one, I'd like to keep it "clean" so I would assume I can use a alcohol wipe to clean the top of mouthpiece?

How many of you experienced trumpet users, carry more than one in the field while you are hunting? and do you always wear them over your neck or are you keeping them in a case in the field and pull them out when you use it?

I like the lanyard when hunting but I also am thinking of a case to put it in while not in field.

I usually only hunt with just one around my neck.  I may keep another one as a back up in a large pocket of my turkey vest or in the center console of my truck.

I always have a Permar improved Jordan stashed away with my strikers, and whatever trumpet I'm toting for the day on a lanyard around my neck.

I tote at least a couple. May have them around my neck or have one in the vest. Do not carry them in any tube or anything as that is extra weight.

I may break down and purchase a real nice case, I seen a few leather ones.  I will only be carrying one at the most on me in field this year for sure, maybe ever.  But I like the idea of a case for it just to protect it.

Dangit Kid.  I said I was going mouth calls only this year, but your thread got me wanting a trumpet.  I spoke with Brian Mero today and have one on the way. Great guy to chat with and very informative.  I guess technically I'm still staying with mouth calls right? :z-dizzy:

Have a good maker make you a all delrin call, never worry about breakage again they are  bullet proof, and one of the best sounding call you can get.

I received my call from Brian Mero this morning in the mail, I have been fairly busy the last few weeks with life and I have not spent a lot of time trying to "master" the calls as I was awaiting this one to get here. I want to say Thank you to the guys who messaged me, and sent me helpful videos and calls via text, I do appreciate everything and I hope to be able to spend some time the next few weeks working on learning the cane yelper and the mero call, I have been looking for some sort of case to carry it in in my vest/bag up here , or on amazon but I have not stumbled across anything yet, the closest thing I seen was a cigar case on amazon but they were not a good fit.

I spent some time on the call and I am extremely happy with it, and all of them, so far. I did some looking and research and I ended up speaking with Glenda and I am going to go with one of her trumpet cases, I just want something to use when I am not in the woods and I can slip call in my vest, or murse. I may have to break down and try one of her satchels this year. As I get older, I have really started to enjoy carrying a turkey chair, and I have used a sling pack/satchel off and on the last few years but they were just a little small. The standard will definitly hold my coffee thermos and a few waters.

I am going to look into some custom locator calls now, I have been using store bought owl and crow calls but I figure I may as well get custom ones.

She was also amazing to deal with and I will be ordering more from her soon. Thanks Glenda!

Very sharp looking cane yelper,
you should have a good range of different tones with it and your trumpets

I called in my first longbeard with a trumpet this morning, I actually had good luck with using it as I have called in a bunch of jakes opening morning and hens but had some longbeards hang up, this morning was a different story, the mero was too much for the handful of longbeards and some hens. I may not be great with it yet, but I can use it and I think I am actually pretty decent, and just learning with it. Thanks again to everyone with the suggestions a few months back. No more carrying around pot and box calls, mouth calls and trumpets only.

How would I know which calls, are easier to learn on? or is that on an individual  person to decide and figure out for themselves? I assume It comes down to the person. I'd like at least two to start with but don't want to make the learning curve more difficult than I have too.

I assume you are talking about his smaller improved jordan yelper?

I was talking about the new model because that's what's available from him, but if you find an original design there is nothing wrong with them, they sound really good

Thought we were talking about the same call but wanted to be sure. One other thing - That call is also just about indestructible. It will last a hunter a lifetime.

Anyway, Hope you have waxed some birds by now Crow. My new Mossberg Bantam we discussed has claimed two thus far. That gun is a joy to carry in the woods compared to my much heavier 12 gauges.
