Title: Another how many guns question-how many do you travel with?
Post by: Tail Feathers on February 28, 2021, 07:40:18 PM
I usually drive to my out of state hunts, and I take two guns.  I figure if I travel a few hundred miles, I better be prepared for a mechanical break.  My backup is a single shot and I have confidence in both guns patterns.

Anyone here take two on road trips?

I always take two. Same for deer season. Don't want to be out of the game because of something as simple as a broken firing pin.

Always carry a back up, never leave home without it.

Two guns if I'm going out of state. 12 and a 20 gauge.

Two, a single shot back up as well.

Before I started toting a back up, on a fall turkey hunt, buddy's gun had a firing pin break. Stopped the hunt cold, we had to find a local gunsmith. Fortunately that gunsmith had the exact same gun and pulled the pin from his own gun and installed it in ours.

He got a good tip that day.

Many trips,  many years and never even thought about a back up gun. Guess I've been fortunate. Seems like i have too much gear in the first place anyway.

We went to Florida last year and the guy who owned the place had a rig set up to hold the guns on the front of his side by side. So we tear off out of there and are riding through a rough oak hammock and all of a sudden there's a loud crash and the side by side jumps like we hit a big limb or something. Guy driving hollers, "What the $&*% was that?!?" My buddy's riding in the back says real deadpan and stoic, "That was my gun." His shotgun had fell out of the holder and the landowner ran it over with his side by side. Needless to say, he was glad he'd brought a back up.

Two shotguns, a hog appropriate rifle, and a 9mm that's always handy.

There is a range of 2-4 guns in my truck through different points of the year. 9mm, 22revolver, 835 if it's turkey season, v3 if it's duck season, 22 carbine is the "truck gun", during deer season often there is the 7mag and the 45-70.
What's that old saying? "How many guns does a guy really need, at least one more"?

One, many times I am close to someone who I could borrow a gun from if needed.  Not a fan of leaving guns in my truck when I am camping and hunting!  I often camp on public ground in the spring.

For turkeys, hunting on my own, then I'd take a backup. If I'm hunting with a buddy and we were on the same page then I'd only take one a piece and share if there was a malfunction. Unless we were planning on splitting up or something going in.

I've seen a buddy have a shotgun malfunction on a pheasant hunt...semi-auto was stove piping when it got too cold. He had a backup, but it was the same model and had the same problem! Lesson is, if you're going to take a back-up, make sure it is something rock solid!

Two on any trip away from home. It's saved my hunt and others who weren't prepared.

Although I will admit there has been a time or two when I took two guns, it has mostly been because I couldn't decide which one I would use once I got to where I was going.  Other than those occasions, I have never worried about it.  Worst case scenario is that if push came to shove and I had a single gun that broke down such that I couldn't fix it, that would give me a good excuse to find the nearest gun store and buy a new one!   ;D

I carry a backup on any hunt that I drive any distance for, that includes turkeys, pheasants, elk, deer, antelope, etc.

I'll be flying to FL in a hair under 3 weeks and I'm actually using a buddy's gun that lives in FL instead of flying with my own.  However, I helped him set the gun up for turkeys when he lived here in MT, so no questions about the gun's effectiveness.

2 turkey guns, and one side arm for protection...where applicable laws permit!

I always bring a spare bow when I hunt out of state, plus my box of tools/accessories just in case.

2 always. No matter what the game. But to this day I don't ever remember having to go to my back-up.

I had a pump that would not eject shells a few years ago that I'd taken on a day hunt for pheasants.  I could still use it as a single shot, but it was an ordeal to get that shell out of the barrel and a second one in.  Luckily my buddy had brought a back-up gun.  The problem was that it was an auto and I'd grown so used to a pump that I wouldn't get the second shot off for trying to tear the forearm off of the thing. :)  It was still easier than fighting with the jammed pump.  I've since fixed that problem with the pump.  Other than that, I don't recall using a back-up gun.

Always 2 shotguns, along with some spare O-rings and a cleaning kit.  And the 9mm of course.

In Alabama currently for the opener in the morning. Two shotguns, a pocket pistol that goes everywhere with me, and my truck gun (glock 21). So, two hunting guns.

I learned the hard way once.

I always take a back-up gun.  This year it's my Super X2 backing up my 20 gauge single.  I've never had a gun fail (knock on wood) but I've had optics take a crap TWICE.

BTW................ I've gone a long way toward fixing THAT problem by getting rid of all my Weaver red dots.   JUNK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
