16, 28 , and .410 Turkey Gun Forum / Re: Mossberg Silver Reserve Tu...Last post by SA410Turkey - Today at 10:25:03 AMI just bought a silver reserve Turkey in 28 gauge and I can say I'm am pleasantly surprised by the gun. I have two SA-28's and love them both, this spring I shot a gobbler with each gun. I thought it would be nice to have an over under for a close shot and also a 40 yard shot in the same gun instead of two different guns. I read a lot about over unders and poa and poi and which barrel to use for your tight choke. Use lead in your open choke etc etc. I was lucky that I could use the chokes I had for my SA-28's in the silver reserve. I decided to go with the top barrel for my tight choke and bottom for the more open choke. I wanted to use the same TSS shells that I had on hand which were Verdict 2 3/4" 1 1/2oz of 9 shot and Salt Creek 2 3/4" 1 1/4oz of 10 shot. Chokes tried were IC .520 & .525, Trulock .515 3 step and the factory full that came with the gun. Patterns were useable but I wanted to use just the bead so they were uncentered which could have been corrected with a red dot. Those patterns were all shot with the TSS 9 shot. I remembered I had a Pattern master Code Black Turkey in .515 so I put it in and shot it with the TSS 9's. Decent but not as dense as I wanted but centered. I put in the Salt Creek 10's and shot at 40 yards and was amazed. The pattern was dense, I normally don't count pellets but I had to know what was in that 10 inch circle. I counted 368 bb's in that 10 inch circle. I though that's a good 40 yard load. Then I put in the Improved cylinder choke that came with the gun and shot various lead loads that shot ok but there weren't what I would consider a good killing pattern, only a few bb's in the vitals. I decided to try the same Salk Creek 1 1/4 ounce of 10's TSS that I was using in my tight barrel and it was a nice centered pattern that's not escape able and will be good from 2 steps to 28 yards. I didn't like the short length of the factory IC choke so I'm going to have Sumtoy build me an open choke so that the extended chokes are the same length. Pattern master doesn't build custom chokes. With the bead I aim the tight choke barrel just below the waddles and with the open choke I aim directly at the waddles. That mite be the way I hold the bead that there's alittle difference in the patterns but not much. I put the bead like your dotting an i so I can see the whole bead, if I took a finer bead I'm sure it would be lower poi. All and all I love the gun! Trigger is alittle heavy but not bad with no creep. The gun is tight but I'm sure it will break in with more use. The short over all length will be a plus in a blind and easy to manage in thicker cover. My other Turkey guns will be collecting dust, I love a 28 gauge, short light with no recoil and I never feel like I need a bigger gun.

Other places?...Not so much, CURRENTLY.
Having said that, I will point the blame, at least partially, at one entity that has not been mentioned. That is...wildlife managers, themselves. I don't know about other states, but I can tell everybody for a fact that an air of nonchalance (and seeming unawareness) exists HERE with what is happening across the country in terms of trends in turkey numbers AND the impacts human hunting is having on them. The very fact that many states are taking rather draconian steps towards reducing the impacts of hunting (i.e. bag limit reductions, shortening season lengths, etc.), and the lack of awareness of what the impacts will be to states that are not doing that, is short-sighted, in my opinion. In short, the "tunnel vision" I see here in my state indicates to me that our wildlife managers do not recognize, and seriously consider, the big picture of what is happening around us, both in surrounding states as well as nationally. That lack of "vision" is a looming recipe for disaster here. #10
