2024 Scattered Flock / Re: Seasons winding down.
Last post by JeffC - Today at 08:58:11 AM
Ran up to Vermont to hunt with my son. 3 days and never saw or heard a bird we could hunt. Hunted 3 different WMAs and a coworker of my son's property who was seeing a strutter almost every day. Never even found any sign of birds. Was great trip just getting to hunt with him and see new ground. The mountains really showed me how out of shape I am. Saw birds close to houses, had a Tom gobble at my truck as we drove down a gravel road. I told him to put in the effort to scout and find areas of birds for next year.
Jersey season closes on Friday, doubt I will get over again this week. Eating 5 tags from 3 different states but was a great year!

Turkey Calls / Re: Beginners calls
Last post by perrytrails - Today at 08:28:30 AM
Quaker boy double reed
Lynch one sider
Paul Butski double glass.

Paul was at a local seminar back in the early 90's
Had a box full of double glass pots and a box of strikers.
He picked a pot going through several and matched a striker to it, signed the back of the pot. $20

Unknown how many birds were called in with that pot, I was offered a lot of money for it many times.

If your good with it thats all that matters. Shoot what you want.

At the end of the day it's your hunt so it's your choice. Only you know how you want to end your season. Personally it doesn't hurt to let one walk away once and while.

General Forum / Re: Jakes on accident...
Last post by eggshell - Today at 08:21:46 AM
I have killed two or three jakes I believed were longbeards, but they were no accident. I killed the bird I intended to shoot. I identified a target that was legal and decided to shoot it and I never regretted it. I simply made the choice not to wait and see a longbeard and I was fine with my choice every single time. It was always a gobbling bird that came to the call and gave a good game. I have never apologized or felt guilty for shooting jakes. I don't target them and 90 % of the time will let them walk away. However, if it's late season and I'm tired and a jake works good I'll bust his head and feel fine about it. Now to quantify these remarks. I don't know my numbers, but I imagine I've killed over 175 birds and I have shot maybe 8-10 jakes and most of them in the early years of my 53 seasons. Yet, I may shoot one next year. I do not view jakes as a lesser prize, but I pass them because they are the future. Don't let peer pressure keep you from shooting a jake, if he satisfies your requirements in a hunt, shoot him in the beak.

Whichever direction your heart told you to go would be the right thing, Z.

Hide and seek turkey hunting on your own property with a good friend and then getting a dandy gobbler that he called up? Man, what a perfect way to spend an afternoon! Congratulations!

Cheers  ;D
