As can clearly be seen by anyone reading on a third grade level, each person has their own opinions and ethics standards.

One of the number one indicators of two bit hacks, wannabes, posers and desperate skill deprived individuals in the south are those that intentionally shoot jakes or bearded hens.

Kids or the mental defective are given a pass on the first one. But that's it and no self respecting turkey hunter would do so intentionally. What meat hunter or hunter of any kind would want to shoot a Turkey less than a year old that has never seen a spring hunting season and has no idea what's happening?

Imagine my surprise reading the accidental Jake shooting thread?

My respect for making sure my harvested bird is as follows: Most of the birds I harvest are within an hour of my home. I harvest most of my birds between daybreak and 9 am. By 11 am, my bird is cleaned, washed and strained  in the refrigerator. By 1:00 pm, it is vacuum sealed and put in freezer if I don't consume it same day. I don't rest till my bird is done, and chilled. I save the tail feathers for the scouts, they use them in craft classes making displays with them...

If a person hunts turkeys (or deer or whatever)....or anything else....for the thrill and rush of the hunt.  Yet gifts the meat, most times, to someone else who will use it all.....

That guy has no business buying tags and being in the woods enjoying the hunt ??   He has no right to be respected ??
Not from me. Just my personal beliefs.

Alrighty, then.   :icon_thumright:

I think there is room for nuance in this discussion. I do not hunt turkeys primarily for the meat. It's way more economical and logical to buy a domestic turkey.

However, the meat is certainly not an after thought. I hunt a lot locally and in other states, always unguided and I always prepare for how I'm going to get the meat home. It's not that hard. I was gone on a 13 day DIY trip out west in late April and early May and brought multiple packages of meat home. Taking an animal's life should not be a cavalier thing.

I almost always take the bulk of the legs too, but I could be criticized for not keeping the wing meat, neck meat or turkey feet either as they are edible.

I'm fortunate as I'm retired to be able to hunt a lot and I keep almost all the game I take for my family's consumption, but at times when someone is interested in eating some wild game and after they promise me they'll definitely use it, I'll gladly give it to them.

I swapped some turkey legs for some moose steaks recently. That was a win for me!

As a kid, I harvested probably most of the songbirds of the South East US with my BB gun. I realize now that most of those kills were illegal, but my dad made sure I ate every bird I killed. Meadowlark and Blue Jay aren't good. Robins are.

The point is we should all be good stewards of the animals we kill, be grateful to the animal for the meat and make every attempt to utilize the meat or see that it is for sure utilized by others.

Utilizing the meat of animals is a privilege and not a burden and remains a priority but not necessarily the main reason I hunt or fish.
