has anyone done a test on different finishes to see if one is the best for sound quality?

I have used poly...spar...oil/wax....ca...and even automotive clear...i really havent noticed much of a change in sound..but i guess it could if it was applied to heavy...

I don't notice any sound  difference when I paint my home. , still sounds the same

I was wondering the same thing. Especially on boxes.

Having built acoustic guitars for many years, I can tell you that finish choice and thickness makes a difference in sound/tone. Generally speaking.....The thicker finish = the worse the sound.
