Could you have stood up and rolled the bird? Otherwise it sounds like you did nothing wrong. Also does not necessarily sound like the hunter did anything wrong.I have bumped plenty of birds trying to get too close, and often the acoustics in the woods can make birds sound much further than they are.If the woods are that crowded, I might take some sort of bright chartreuse flag (some idiot might think that orange is a turkeys head) you could quickly put up if you become aware of another hunter coming at you?
