870 20 ga choke recommendations

I just picked up an 870 Express. 26" bbl.  I'm looking for something with a good uniform pattern from 20-40 with TSS 9's. Not looking to set any records in the 10" at 40. Just something that isn't too small at 20. But humane at 40.

The gun came with a modified choke.


Any recommendations?

Is that fairly open at 20 yards?

First is 28 inch with 585 at 40, next is 21 inch at 40, next is 21 inch at 40 with IC 555,next is 575 at 40. In the 4 20 guage platforms  I have  with barrel lengths from 21 to 28 inch the shorter barrel liked 562 best and the longer likes the 585 to 600 all using TSS. Each shotgun will be different. See if someone you know has chokes you can try and get the one  you like best.

What's the IC like at 20 yards?  Big enough for some error?

Very tight with 555 at 20 yards. You will have 1/4  to 1/2 inch fudge factor.

I'm using a Sumtoy 562 for the 21 inch barrel as it is more even . 555 is way to tight for me at 20.

I have a carlsons 568 in my 26" 870 and it throws awesome hunting patterns to me. Not too tight at 20 and a really balanced 20" pattern at 40 with federal tss #9

I just bought a Tightwad .570 this morning.

Honestly if you have one a Rem. SF might do really well with a 26" barrel. I cant remember for sure but I believe there in the .570-.575 range

I just bought a Tightwad .570 this morning.

Let us know how that Tightwad works for you. I tried one and I was not impressed but here in Iowa 9's aren't legal, so I tested 7's. It did do a good job with lead 7 1/2s that I used to test poi.

Remington SF works great in my Express 21" barrel.
