First of all congrats to all you Assassins for who have been smokin turkeys. I love smoked turkey, don't you.
Our opening day was last Saturday and I went right to my A #1 honey hole and snuck in about 1 hour before daylight. This is an area where turkeys have roosted for as long as I can remember. So I set up about 75 yards from the regular roost, sit down and shut up. A short while later when dawn starts to break I look up and see a bird roosted in a tree about 30 yards infront of me. Eventually he and his 2 buddies break the silence. Cool. Just sit still and shut up and see what happens. Well they pitch down and surround me. Two in front of me were out of range. One behind me was CLOSE but I was pinned down. So I just sat there waiting for one to walk in front of my gun. Counting hens, I might have had 10 birds around me. As they walked off I tried calling them back but no luck. Later that morning I called up 3 jakes but that's not what we are looking for, are we?
Scouted the same spot Tuesday before work. They were gobbling at the same spot.
Hunted Thursday and they were roosted on the next ridge. I was in a ground blind with the Mrs. so going after them was not an option. So we didn't stay long (had to go to work) and backed outta there.
Hunted this AM as well. Another 1 hour prework hunt. Had one gobble in the roost about 70 yards away. Didn't want to play.
In all cases these birds pitched down and walked off to the west. Problem is, I was east. Not tomorrow. Looks like I have to keep that alarm clock set at 4 AM for a while longer. Still have until Memorial Day.
Good luck to all of you still in the woods. You all be safe. Congrats to all of you that have put em on the board.
Good luck to all still in the woods.
