BTW, if he looks damp to you, you are right. He wound up flopping himself off into that trickle of a branch and lodged himself underneath the log you see on the left side. When I got to him, he was nowhere to be found. It wasn't until he moved his wing and rippled the surface that I was able to find him. Mouth to beak resuscitation proved to be futile and he was pronounced D.O.B (dead on bank).

When he approached the decoy, he went into strut and I saw the full, unbroken fan. This told me he was going to be a featured entry in my next sandwich. He finally moved out to where I had a clear shot and the rest was academic. Once I finally located him and announced that everyone needed to get out of the pool, I let him flop for a bit to wring out and kneeled down to check out what equipment he was sporting. I pulled up a leg and saw a Freaking Jake Nub for a spur! WHAT!! I checked his other leg and found it to be even shorter than the first! I asked out loud (to who ever was listening) if I had just shot a(n illegal) Jake? I dropped both trotters and said (by this point I am talking out loud to myself) "What kind of beard does he have?" I flipped him over and lo and behold there was a beard that looked to be almost 10" long. He was just an abnormal 2 year old member of the local flock who would have lost every fight he got into with any other bird older than an actual Jake. In the final analysis he was just a healthy, heavy and delicious gobbler that I was glad to have gotten.
