I woke up at 2:30am this morning to make the two hour drive into Pennsylvania to hunt their opener on a large piece of state land I've hunted in the past. I arrived at about 5:10 and headed into the woods at exactly 5:20. After about ten minutes of walking I started owl hooting every 150 yards or so to try and find a bird. Once it got past fly down time I switched over to yelping on my trumpet. At 6:25 after a solid hour of walking I got a response from about 150 yards away. I called again on my trumpet to pinpoint his location and then quickly sat down. After pulling up my face mask and putting on my gloves I called again to find out he'd cut the distance in half. I switched over to a diaphragm call just in time to see his fan coming down the mountain. I called a couple more times not that I needed to, but just for the fun of it. He came right up to me and I shot him at 30 yards. According to my pedometer, I was 2.34 miles from the truck. Two hour drive, one hour walk, 5 minute hunt, one hour walk back, two hour drive back home. I took my time walking back to the truck letting the mornings events sink in and enjoying the perfect weather and view.
