Old guns and patterns

I would like to see some older guns and patterns. The patterns from 20 or 30 years ago. I have talked to a couple of old timers and they hunt with modifed 12 gauge and 2.75 #6 loads and kill a bunch of birds. I'm just curious what their patterns look like.

Me too. case in point .. I never patterned my 9 year old mossberg 500 until this year .
Killed every turk I ever shot at with it.
After patterning it I realized it was shooting way right and low . and the pattern sucked. (according to the 10" circle at 40yds)
Now that Ive changed chokes ,tested different loads, and zeroed the scope i should be able to kill a turkey .
not sure how much messing around the old timers did.

I never had a problem killing turkeys. Last year I patterned my gun and got it to shoot nice and tight. Missed a bird at 30 yards. Sometimes tight patterns can mess you up.

One big difference is old timers did one of two things, they called them in close and killed them or toted a 10 gauge threw enough shot at them that they could kill them farther...

Seriously though, my grandad hunted a long time with a double barrel that is modified and full and shoots the mod barrel first. He kill probably 80 birds with it before he went to the 1300. You just have to know what your gun is capable of and have the discipline to let him walk.

my old winchester model 12 3" heavy duck pstterns better than my franchi affinity and browning bps. the latter 2 have custom chokes installed.

every winchester model 12 heavy duck i have seen shot similarly. by far the best, and tightest, factory guns i have ever seen. very even distribution of shot.

I'm not a Model 12 fan like some folks, but I have a Heavy Duck gun and I have to admit it shoots patterns as tight well formed as any of the various screw in turkey chokes I have.

I'm not a Model 12 fan like some folks, but I have a Heavy Duck gun and I have to admit it shoots patterns as tight well formed as any of the various screw in turkey chokes I have.

I'm sure I qualify as an "old guy" and those Model 12s were killers. The barrels were bored from chamber to muzzle for a particular choke. If you did your part, they did theirs. Shots at turkeys with whatever load you had and knew that it would do the job were the ones taken.
I do not remember a hunter who would long socialize or hunt with a "skybuster" or anyone who they knew took shots that were too long. Game was respected.
Those guns, at least the ones that I've shot and seen shot, shot to the point of aim and I don't remember ever seeing or hearing about anyone patterning one.

I've patterned my 30" full choke barrel for my 870, it was made in the 60's, so it's not that old. My observation is it pattern better than the 26" Rem choke barrel with a full tube. I was curious myself, so one afternoon I tried it, I was using high brass game loads. The pattern was better, but not by much, maybe a 5% gain at best. It's best to get to know your shotgun, and what it will do, and won't do! A pattern board will give you a lot of info, but it does take time, but it's time well spent!

I'm interested in this also. I still have my first gun. It is a Coast-to-Coast Mastermag, which is basically a Mossberg 500 built/branded for Coast-to-Coast hardware stores. It is a 30" full fixed choke. I got mine back in the early 70's(40+ years old). I have killed a lot of ducks with it and think it would be kind cool to take a longbeard with it.

I remember those, haven't seen one in years. As a matter of fact an old guy that I hunted with years ago had one, and he was confident using it for deer, using 00buck he would kill them at what I consider long range for buckshot, but he did it year after year.

Back in my day a 40 yard shot was unheard of, we always patterned at 30 yards and really worked to get him into 20-25 yards.  Amazing what technology can do to the mind set.
