Playing with some mouth calls earlier today. How do I sound. By the time I got to the second call my mouth was drying out on me. How do my purrs sound? Any advise on getting a decent cluck other than saying "Pluck" My under bite makes it so that does not work for me. Thanks.

Before I move ahead, I am by no means a good mouth caller.

What really helped me increase in my confidence a while back was to open and close my lips on every note and pressurize air between my body's diaphragm muscle and the surface of my tongue where it touches the call  reed. Watch a hen turkey call. Her beak pronounces every single note and her body will heave and twitch slighty. I also like to watch Doug Adkins videos at Cane Creek calls. They way he clucks really helped me out.

Okay thanks, I do try to watch as many of those as I can, though I have not watched his yet. I have had to learn to adapt a little because of the underbite, I can't use the front of my tongue or I just kinda whistle as my underbite puts my tongue so far forward of the call. I kind of turn my tongue to the right and use the left side of it to get any sound at all.

I`m not an expert either, question-what cuts are you trying? Loosten up & relax ur mouth & move you mouth each note. Ur getting sound so now its just practice. I learned many years ago when driving around i always had a call with me. Keep at it & it will come, Mike

Thanks Mike, I could use all the advise I can get.

I agree with Mike.  Once you get where you can make "turkey-like" sounds (which you are already doing), it is all about practicing until you have complete control over your airflow, and the corresponding "mechanics" in your mouth to achieve the desired sounds.

Once you have achieved a level of proficiency in airflow and mouth mechanics, the next step is to determine what call design you should be using to achieve the final sounds you want to be able to make.  That process often involves a lot of experimentation with different call designs, and if you are buying individual calls for that, it can get expensive.

One word of advice...until you have your basic mechanics and air control mastered, stick with the less-expensive calls.  For individuals that have not mastered the basics, buying expensive mouth calls is just throwing your money away.

Get easier to use calls

Great point,...and for beginners, that usually means a double reed call (sometimes triple) that is made from thin to medium latex material.  Unfortunately, call makers often do not tell you what thickness of latex is used in a particular call.  Those of us with lots of experience can generally "eyeball" a mouth call and make a determination, but that's usually not so easy for beginners.

The Primos calls that I have are the easiest I have found so far. I have tried H.S. Strut, Quaker Boy (The worse of the lot) Primos and some others that I can't recall. I did buy some others recently but they felt very thick in my mouth (the entire call, not just reeds) and that was the major problem I had with the Quaker Boy calls though at least I am getting some more decent sound out of these which I never did with the Quaker Boy calls.

At 13:33 this mentions a call package that is supposed to help you determine the best style of calls for you, I am going to pick this up but right now it is going to have to wait until after the season because of cash flow problems (Putting it all in the gas tank to go hunting :) ) I have a couple of things to finish out here then I won't be buying anything else until at least June which is after our season here in NY

No, I had lost the information on it but somebody pointed it out on a thread this past week so I will buy it when I get paid again.

Well I was going to go ahead and order it now but 9.00 shipping for 4 mouth calls seems rather stiff, anybody happen to have a promo code from them that may save me a few bucks? Thanks.
