870 not patterning well

I just got an 870 supermag and it is patterning mediocre at best. I'm shooting #9 TSS load out of a 3.5 inch shell, with a .675 Indian Creek choke. I'm only getting 250ish hits at 50 yards. My question is, will a clean gun shoot better? I had not cleaned the gun at all after buying it so it may have been a little oily. I cleaned it real good last night, and will shoot it again in a few days, but I was curious what everyone's experiences were with something like this. Any information will be great.

I am no expert, but I like running a bore snake before I fire the high dollar stuff and then afterwards as well so I can keep it consistent as best I can.

FYI: 250 hits at 50 yards is not mediocre.

Assume you are using the Federal shells? That would be roughly 325 at 40 yards which is a bit mediocre for a 810 pellet load. From what I've seen so far the Federal shells prefer a tight choke. My guess is a .665 Indian Creek would out perform the .675.

I clean my guns barrel after each shot. It can't hurt to deep clean it and try again.

I am shooting hand loads. I originally bought a Jebs .665, but it was too constricted, causing a horrible pattern. I was a little gun shy of getting an Indian creek in .665 for that reason, but probably should have.

i hate to sound like a fan boy but call Jebs or Sumtoy and i assure you that they will do everything in there power to get what u strive for but brother 250 at 50 yards is a pecker wrecker

Yeah that's not a mediocre pattern.  I have same gun and .675 choke as you, and shooting Federal TSS 9.

At 40 yds, I'm averaging 330-350 in 10 inches.  I would think that equates to ~250 at 50 yds.

Yeah you could tighten it up to .665 like Gobble said, but I decided not to.

With .675 I'm getting ~350 in 10 inch and another 300-325 in 10-20 inch circle.  That's about a 50/50 split, and nice even pattern throughout 20 inches.

Works for me because I don't plan on shooting far, and lots of wiggle room.

I guess if I wanted to shoot further I could tighten the constriction up, and get a denser core.  But 350 pellets in 10 inches is already overkill.

I'd say your good with what you got.....

I shoot an 12ga. 870 super mag w/ 26" polished barrel shooting a .670 IC. Loading Hal's 2.5oz. recipe with 8X9s, I am in the high 500s  in a 10" at 40 yards. For what it's worth, I also have a .665 IC, but it over constricted the shot and blew out the pattern.

You shooting the 2.5oz load? Assume your are drawing the circle after you shoot around the most dense part of your pattern?
