After an eventful opening weekend I still had both my tags.
My hunting buddy "D" came down from OH. D has killed one gobbler and one jake coming into this season. He put a goal on this trip to catch his first ever striper so went fishing on Thursday. I hit the turkey woods with fellow OG Member "RS" who had already filled both of his tags. Filled my first tag thanks to RS's great work on the 20 year old $8 Lohman box call. D caught a dozen stripers. So both of us were able to take the pressure off the weekend and enjoy.
The next day (Friday) we all went to RS's favorite spot. He and I had scouted out two gobblers traveling together. So D and I set up with RS on the call. Sure enough those two birds did exactly what we had anticipated and with simultaneous shots we knocked down the pair of 3 year olds.
The next day (Saturday) D and I did a little listening and heard nothing. We called in spot until about 8:00. I sent him to a little spot I had cleared out and told him to call me when he was ready to come out but do his best to sit there until 11am. Sure enough at 10:30 he had 3 gobblers and a jake in at about 30 yards. Filled his last tag.
So Saturday we were able to have a few extra beverages around the camp fire, not worrying about getting up early to squeeze in a Sunday hunt before he drove home.
It's always nice to catch up with an old friend. It's always fun when you hunt with an old hunting buddy. It's always special when you make a memory. This weekend was a bit of all of those. This was a special weekend. One we'll talk about it 20 years from now.
