I'm looking for a new slate to fit in my collection, right now my two favorites are distinctly different, one a Lonzo Birdseye and the other a Schaffer blue mahoe. Birdseye is very mellow and soft, Schaffer is very sharp and loud almost as much as a glass/crystal. Y'all guys that run through a bunch, anything out there that isn't a two year wait that'll fall in between the two?

Id have to recommend a slate with a wood soundboard. Such as a Lonnie Sneed Hot Hen or a Cody Woodsman Drop Dead. I have both calls and IMO they both spit feathers. Ive been hearing alot of good things about the Wynne slates too, does anybody have a soundfile?

Glenn Marrer Maple can be added to the list.

I was looking for the same thing and settled on a Natural Addiction with a  padauk pot. I don't regret my decision.

You might look at other strikers.  Changing the striker will change the sound of the pot call.
No trees were hurt in the sending of this message, however a large number of electrons were highly inconvenienced.

Very important note here, strikers do make a difference, another thing I like the idea of a wooden soundboard, it will mellow down the call, I would recommend using a cherry wood or oak wood for a soundbaord.

IMO Brown Tie Turkey Calls makes a great slate for the volume you are describing.
