Last year I put together my old youth 870 for my gf and I've really gotten to love that little set up. Now it's nothing super special, but I really wanna make make my own with pistol grip a red dot taped and drilled the works. I'm gonna to try and find a used 870 but if not just buy a new one, not a huge dent in the wallet compared to some of my other guns.

But the main question is, is there any advantage or disadvantage to the 26" full size 870 to the youth 21" barrel. I've searched back several pages and haven't seen anything that quite answers my question.

The 21" barrel normally patterns the Federal HW 7's better. :OGturkeyhead:

You can't shot the difference between the 26 over the 21...with the 21 in...lost less barrel to hang up on limbs and such...go with the 21 after turkey choke your going to gain another inch or so....Buy a new gun that way and make it the way you want...in a new gun you know what you have in use not so much...

I like the Youth model.  Less hang-ups on stuff and the short stock allows a ton of movement when birds come in where they ain't supposed to.

21"  proven on the pattern boards and in the turkey haunts , plus handy and maneuverable.

As long as it is a turkey only, I would go with the youth.  Love the one I set up for my daughter and as soon as she kills one with it I will be borrowing it. Don't want to kill one with it before her. My son already killed his first with it. Many years ago.

My son , when younger didn't want me to use HIS gun even after he killed quite a few with it !
I snuck it out a few times though
Now in his late teens I still cant talk him into my 12 gauge 870 21" barrel so i can change the 20 with optics i like.
He knows what works and will not change. Got away with a few stock changes though, sure-shot now.
Will not let me dip it , not even in bottomland ,darn it!

Thanks for the replies guys, I just wasn't quite sure if the 26" would throw a Better pattern or not over the 21" looks like I can get a new one for 289 before tax just gonna go ahead and get synthetic since I'm gonna change out the stock anyways, then get it dipped. And just to get this correct, I've been shooting mag blend in my youth 870 now getting 107 in a 10" circle at 40. It seems most people are using heavy 7 to get # up or should i stick with magblend and play with some different chokes?

Hw#7 or TSS #9 is what most people shoot

HW#7 and a Trulock HW choke gets high 160s in my daughter's gun 10" at 40 yards.  It did not like the Mag Blends.
