Choke tube for 3 1/2 inch

 A buddy and i was talking about choke tubes for shotguns that shoot 2 3/4 , 3, & 3 1/2 inch shells. He thinks he could shoot a .640 with 3 1/2 inch loads. Im afraid that it would be to tight and may blow up the barrel.
I shoot 3 1/2 inch 2 3/8 ounce #6 loads out of a .670 choke and i am almost afraid its to tight.
Does it matter about the chokes in a all 3 size shotgun ? I seen where shotguns like 835 that are 3 1/2 inch use .670 or larger. So im thinking thats the way to go. What do you guys think the tightest choke should be for 3 1/2 loads? Thank you and god bless.

835's have overbored 10 gauge barrels is why they shoot .670" and up.  It has nothing to do with shell length.  A guy I used to hunt with shot the .643" SSX for his Remington with 3.5" H13 6's and 7's.

All depends on gun make/barrel diameter.

 I am thinking thats a lot of lead coming out of a tight choke. The shells i shoot have 2 3/8 ounce of #6 in them. I think i seen where they have around 700 pellets. Thats a lot of pellets to push out of a .640 .

You are thinking correctly, that is a lot of lead. 


835's .670 and up other 12 gauges are typically .640 and up for the tightest constriction of chokes.

It doesnt matter if you put 6 ounces of shot in the shell. There will only be a certain amount of shot squeezing through at the same time no matter if it is a 7/8 ounce or your 2-3/8 ounce loads. The only difference is the length of the shot column. You think it is not possible for someone with a remington super mag to shoot a 2-3/8 ounce load? Of course it is possible and it is done regularly with more constriction that .670. Your 835 does not have the standard bore diameter. It is over bored to 10 gauge size therefore it tends to use a more open choke than a standard bore 12 gauge. They do not make shell length specific chokes!

Actually Pattermaster makes shell length specific chokes for 3" and 3 1/2" loads...

Most that will happy is that the choke will swell and be tough to get out, or it will just blow the pattern. Honestly open that choke up a bit and have a more versatile pattern.

 My buddy just called and said he just blew the choke off the end of the barrel. Said it looked like the threads on the choke and barrel are gone.
We both got mossberg 535's about 2 weeks ago. I guess its a good thing it come with 2 barrels.  He is calling mossberg today about what happen. But like i told him. You cant put a .640 on and think it will shoot 100 yards because some hunting show did. It said on the .640 package for card shooting...#8 #9 shot only.
Im glad it didnt happen it the hills and i had to pack him out. Goes to show. Some of US younger fellers need to start listening to the older folk . Im new at the choked shotguns. Thats why im on here asking some of the older guys how to or which one is best. Thank you and god bless.

Depends on the gun.  835s have a bigger bore, therefore bigger choke, benelli has a smaller bore, so smaller choke.  I have seen .640s shoot great out of Benellis.

Can't say I ever even heard of a choke getting the treads stripped and flying out the barrel!  If you think about it it's pretty well impossible.  the transition into the choke is a smooth one.  If the shot charge is to much for the opening, well that would happen past the threads and result in a bulged or split choke.  Not saying it didn't happen, just saying that its the only time I've ever heard anything like that.  Split and bulged chokes and barrels yes.  A choke tube being stripped and leaving a barrel! wow!  Do me a favor and post some pics!  This I gotta see.

Call Rob Roberts gunworks @ 870-251-9955 and see what he recommends choke & shell wise for your 535,or buy an Indian Creek ,Jebs headhunter,Jelly head max,Rhino,Sumtoy,Trulock,or a Down & Dirty Haymaker choke. Then dump the 2 3/8oz shells and get Federal HEAVYWEIGHT #7 shot / 3.5" /1 7/8oz.shells,or H-13 Magblend 3.5" 2 1/4oz. or Winchester Longbeard 3.5" / 2oz. / #4,#5,#6 shot and get to shootin' Oh yea, when you shoot DON'T shoot at one of those turkey head targets,get a piece of paper or cardboard thats at least 3'x3'....4'x4' would be better but whatever you can get. The reason for the big BLANK sheet of paper ....it will show you if your point of impact (POI) is indeed where your point of aim (POI) is,also it will tell you how many pellets you have in the most dense portion of your pattern....the way you find that out is....draw a 10" circle around the most dense portion of your pattern and count how many hits you have.
