Currently I have a 28" barrel on my 870 which is the barrel that came with the combo. To buy a shorter "turkey" barrel would run a little more than $200. Would be cheaper to have the barrel cut down since I only use it for turkey?

I would buy a barrel and resale your 28" barrel if you don't have a use for it. But it sounds to me like a really good excuse to buy and new short barrel gun.

Not that much cheaper and you would have to have it tapped for tubes..Id just buy a barrel.

Check with Sumtoy, he has said he likes to cut stuff up and thread for chokes . from reading on here he makes a good choke too. When i checked into it he was reasonably priced i thought.

Okay, it sounds like it might be a pain to mess with my bird barrel but what about having my extra slug barrel threaded for tubes? From what I've seen in pictures my slug barrel looks pretty similar to the Rem turkey barrel.

Good idea...as long as the slug barrel isnt rifled.  If you get it threaded for chokes you can also get a rifled choke tube for slugs that surprisingly work pretty good.

I just looked at it and I don't think it is. Not compared to my cantilever barrel anyway

You've been given some excellent advice. There is always a market for good barrels and if you want a shorter one, you'll be much better off finding one and selling your 28" barrel.

Lots of horror stories about cut-off and threaded barrels.
