Anybody know what the factory size choke is in a Moss. 835 and what it would be rated for.Trying to get ready. My gun will be here next week.

Philippe

The factory Ultimag chokes are .695 and mostly useless unless you are in a pinch.

That's a little harsh.  Many turkeys died by factory chokes and lead 6's before all the Super Full choke and turkey load craze.

My father in law started turkey hunting in the early 70's.He was a big quail hunter and the only gun he owned was a Remington 1100 26 inch improved cylinder so it doubled as his turkey gun. He shot lead 2 3/4 inch #6 shells and killed so many turkeys he should be in prison right now. But, he still talks about a lot of them that got away.

My cousin has owned an 835 for years and killed a pile of turkeys with the factory extra full choke.  For the last several years he's been shooting Remington nitro 3.5"#6.  Calling a factory choke useless because it won't out perform an expensive aftermarket choke is like calling a stock pickup truck useless because it wont out perform a jack-up customized one that someone has a ton of money in.  If the choke performs to your liking with a load you like, then its just as good to you as an aftermarket. And that's all that counts!

The truth hurts, factory chokes mostly stink, sure they will work but they wont give you the true full potential of the load you are using out of that particular firearm. Are they usable? Sure!, Are they optimal? Nope!

if your getting a killing pattern to 40 yards and shooting most of your birds at 20-30 like my cousin, myself, and many on this forum do, then they are more than usable.  Optimal is all in the mind of the user.  If you feel you need an aftermarket choke that gives big numbers to kill birds, then by all means use one and be happy.  But don't call a product useless because it doesn't suit your style

Try some Winchester Longbeards with that factory choke first.

I have never used anything in my 835 except the factory extra full choke. All the birds I've shot sure didn't think it was worthless. But I'm mostly a bowhunter so any gun feels like cheating.

Agreed. My mentor has killed more turkeys than anyone I know, and he's used nothing more than his browning factory full choke. It's not about killing birds at 60 yards; it's about killing them when you smell their breath.

that is the problem today, most everybody wants to SHOOT birds at ridiculous ranges, nobody wants to HUNT them
it's not the harvest,it's the chase

Yea don't know what that guy is thinking saying it's useless. If will out perform some after market chokes out there.try winchester longbeards first and then the xx's. If that don't work I'd try federals. Stag away from hevi shot it could damage the choke. I've seen a pile of birds die with that gun and choke. Dude must have something against Mossberg's.

BowBendr

Stuff that new 835 with some Longbeard #4's and try it. Saying that the factory choke is not optimal is just plain crazy talk....
