Barrel removal and POI

I want to remove my barrel in order to deep clean it.  Will this mess up my current POI as I am currently sighted in?

If your sights are on your barrel, no. If you use an optic mounted on the receiver, possibly.

Even if the sights are mounted on the barrel the POA/POI can change when a barrel is removed and reinstalled.  Depending on the shotgun's design, the tightening of the magazine tube cap will induce torque on the barrel which can change the POI.  You won't know until you reinstall the barrel, tightening the magazine cap fully w/ vice grips w/ the cap protected by a piece of heavy rubber, then re-sighting.  I've seen the POI move 4-6 inches w/ barrel removal and reinstallation which is why I never remove a barrel during the hunting season unless I plan on re-sighting.

I mark my barrel and cap then hand tighten it and then I take a rubber tourniquet and go an extra 2 clicks.  Everything stays the same.

Never tighten your mag cap with vice grips!!  They are designed to be hand tightened only!!  Tighten your cap as tight as you can by hand and you're good to go.

Agree, should be hand tight. Yes, you can move POI significantly by using tools. Mark nut and forearm to make sure it clicks back to the same spot and POI stays the same for me.

For a bit of clarification!!  I hand tighten the magazine tube cap, place a piece of heavy rubber sheeting over the cap, take vice grips and give the cap a final light torque, mark the cap and magazine tube for future alignment, then sight-in or pattern the shotgun.  This technique was shown and imparted to me many years ago by a competent gunsmith who specialized in setting-up shotguns for precision card shooters and deer hunters.  To the best of my knowledge, I know of no shotguns that have been damaged or the accuracy impaired by utilizing this technique when done properly.  There are a lot of people who should never be allowed near a shotgun with any tools, and I guess, especially a set of vice-grips.  Like a lot of things, "You've got to know what your doing."
