I have had a friend kill a couple of birds at 70-80 yards and all I can do is just internally shake my head...."Well it was either that or let him walk off" ?

A couple of years ago a had one of those mornings that you dream of. Three different gobblers cutting me off every yelp, roughly within around 200-300 yards. They seemed to drift off and I thought the morning was over, but one fired off down the hill to my left and stepped right out into a ATV trail. I was sitting on the top of the ridge and really couldn't judge how far he was. I shooting a gun that I feel confident in around 30-40 yds BECAUSE I HAVE PATTERNED IT!!!
Anyhow, I decided to let it walk because I thought it was out of range (60-70yds) from my estimation.
Here is the kicker......That would have been my first turkey, and to this day I am still waiting to pull the trigger on my first bird.
It is all about respecting the animal that we love to hunt. I would rather let that bird walk unscathed and come back and deal with him later than to wound it.
I don't regret letting him walk.
I later stepped off where I was sitting and where he was and he was actually 45 yds, so my yardage judgement was off that day. But, I still left the woods with a huge adrenaline rush and called in the other two jakes that had been with him within 5 yds of me.
That was awesome
