speed bead question for the old guys

For those of the more "mature" class who can't see anything close up without reading glasses:  Are you able to see the red dot using a speed bead mount.  I am worried that it will be much to close to my eye and be a red blur?

  I'm not here to review the sight but the mount was garbage and would not let me hold zero. I loved the concept but it needs improvement.

I put a speed bead on my SBE2 Steady Grip and I cannot see any issue with the mount not holding zero. Mine mounts up really solid and would take a hammer to make it move. I have to have reading glasses and I have no issue with seeing the red dot.

I've had one on an 870 SM for the past 4-5 seasons and it has held zero just fine. The plate that sandwiches between the stock and action did seem a little flimsy to me but I can't argue with what I've put it through. Both the SpeedBead mount and the FFII have both held up great for me!

I had one on an 1187 with FF II about 3 yrs ago when I was about 50, and wear bifocals. I had no issues seeing the bead and loved the concept. I had catastrophic mount failure early in the process, and the sight would not hold zero. I agree that the mount is flimsy (at least in the Rem 1187 version). But Burris CS was outstanding and offered to replace it for the same sight or swap out for a standard FF II and 336 mount. I elected to do the latter, had the gun drilled and tapped, and never looked back.

Mount issues might be for particular models, it is definitely an issue on my Winchester SX3 and I wont be bothering to find out if it works on something else.

This is the first I've heard from anyone having any issues with the mount not holding zero....  Must have been something wrong in the situation...

Excellent products! I just put one on my SBE2 and it's very solid.  Very well built!  No issues here.

Yeah, sounds like localized issues to me. The installation process on my 870 was not what I'd call a breeze but once you get it into place it's rock solid. My zero has remained the same since I initially set it 4-5 years ago and even held when I swapped batteries this year.

Its completely possible that I screwed something up, but I am very good with taking apart, installing near anything. I do it for a living, working on firearms is my hobby. 

The issue I had with the mount was that it does not sit flush with the stock/receiver.  It had roughly a 1/8" gap between the stock and base of the mount.  There are foam inserts that I assume are designed to take up that space and also absorb some shock.  They did not seem to do much for me, I could literally move the mount and thus my red dot with my finger while holding the gun on the bench. I could see the dot move up and down on my target, at 40 yards it would move the difference of probably 18-24" when putting pressure on it with my finger.

I figured that out just from trying to find my issue of the POA/POI constantly moving.

It seems to have a mixed bag of results if you look at the reviews out there. I was not the only one with this issue and I do not want to come across on here like I am bashing the entire setup. I recognize the potential and believe it would be fantastic if I could had it hold zero. I wish it had for me, I am glad it seems to do well for most of you.
