For turkey hunting, most strive for a minimum of 100 pellets in the 10" circle (78 square inches more or less) at 40 regardless of shot size. From 10" to 20", the ring has 3 times the surface area of the 10". It would be a rare pattern (none I know of) that has 100 in the 10" ring with 300 in the 10" ring. That would be a great hunting pattern for 40 yards for my purposes with built in forgiveness and not too heavy a load. In order to get 250 or so in the 10-20", the load will most likely put 250 in the 10' ring as well. For hunting, I wouldn't want a pattern of 300 in the 10" with 150 in the 10-20" ring. I limit the above to 40 yard patterns. For my purposes, percentages aren't as important as sufficient reliable killing pattern density in the 10" and 10-20" rings.
