how far do you think a gobbler on the ground can hear soft calling. im talking about so soft a person would have a hard time hearing it at 40 yards. I have really focused getting away from loud and normal calling. I ordered a tear drop from jimmy schaffer and want to use it a lot on these high pressured public land birds. so a gobbler is on the ground , you are soft calling on a not so windy day. how far do you think he can hear it?

I suspect they can hear substantially better than we can, but it could be that they are just more "in tuned" with the sounds in their natural environment than we are.  I believe there is a fine line between calling so loudly that it sounds unnatural to the turkey, and calling so softly that a callable turkey does not hear it.

I have that same call. Jim said they hear it at 100 yards. Just got the call, n haven't tested that yet though. Great sounding call though

I agree they can hear better than we can.  A few years back I called a bird across 300 yards of open pasture with a hurricane wind.  At 150 yards out I watched a tom gobbling at my calls but I couldn't hear him because of the wind.  My hunter killed him 10 minutes later at 25 yards.

One evening I sat on a stone at the end of my barn. My tame hen came and plopped down beside me. As I petted her on the back, she was yelping so soft that you could hear it ok but her beak never opened. Just contented soft soft yelps. When a bird gobbled across the valley, I thought it was a coincidence. After he answered her 5 more times, I became convinced and amazed that he was answering her. It was a still evening but if I told anyone how far he was from us, it would make me seem like one of those guys that sees Bigfoot twice a year. He was very very...very far. Those boys are tuned in sometimes.

I like to get in tight on birds in the roost and plan on using that Schaffer tear drop to pile of a few birds for sure. Soft call is what puts birds in trucks
